Hi

i have an ill female cherry barb, her stomach seams to be swollen and she's lying on her side but can swim if she wants to. She been like this for about 30 hours so far. All my other fish are fine. I have done several water checks with an Api master kit.
Amonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 40ppm ph 7.6. I did a 75% water change anyway. The only thing i have done different is feed them some live daphina and blood worms ( some of these had died in transit but were still fresh). I put very small amounts in so i dont think shes been over fed and all the other fish seam fine like i siad>. Apart from the swollen stomach there no other indicator of disese.

what should i do?

I've had a look round the forum and i think i've awnsered my own question. It looks like it might be dropsy although the swollen adominan, does not have a Pine cone aperance yet.

think i might have to send her to the big fish tank in the sky, i would rather do that than let her suffer.

dont do it.
sounds like she has a swim bladder problem.
try feeding a cooked (deshelled) pea or live bloodworm, both act as a laxative and will
clear any blockage of the digestive tract (the most common cause of swim bladder problems)

if that fails then the other two causes could be the problem
bacterial infection (use a med designed for swim bladder problems)
physical damage; not a lot to do there, just remember there is a goldfish that has lived for over 20 years with a damaged swim bladder and is famous for being upside down all this time.

Thank for you reply.

For the past 2 days i fed her some pea. The Bump on her abdomen has moved further down towards the business end. It has went to just one side of her, she is still unbalanced when swimming. If it is constipition how long should it take to swift? and should i try anything else?

cheers folks

I've been away for a few days so hopefully by now all is ok.
constipation should take 24-48 hrs to clear.
