if you think about it a lot of light coming from the tubes in your aquarium, is lost whilst traveling through the water, because it goes is lost and wasted through the sides of the tank. i want to minimise the amount of light lost. so do you think putting a background round the back and sides of the tank would look wrong as i want to combat losing light. which is a waste of electricity

Cover all 4 sides with mirror.... Thats the only way you will get it all "back" - drawback is, you cant see inside !

it would only work with mirrors as stated or white if you dont have mirrors since white reflects more light back than anything else thats not a mirror..
though why would you want to increase the amount of light in your tank just means more cleaning algae of the rocks and glass

Seriously though, you're familiar with reflectors? A lot of people install aftermarket reflectors behind the bulb to focus the light more.

Most people think the mirrored reflectors work best, but white is the one to use.

tell me more about aftermarket reflectors,do they fit on the t5 like mirror reflectors, and where do you buy them from,do they benefit planted tanks? sorry about all the questions,
