 Why do people test for copper for I tested for copper and it is present in my tank how do I get rid of it and what does copper affect

This is to do with the fact that copper is poisenous to fish, if there is too much in the water. There will be a certain amount of copper in your tap water as it goes through copper pipes, and if it has been in a copper storage tank or boiler.

Personally Ive never had any problems with this (touch wood) but if your worried about it you can do these tests.

Any heavy metals cause cells to function incorrectly, I'm doing some work on it at the moment for Biology so will get back to you with how and why if you want. Only in really high quantities not usually something to worry about, try running your tap for a few minutes before you take the water to run out copper residues in the pipes, :)

Copper is usually only tested for by people who have planted tank, as copper is one of the important minerals that plants need, its only dangerous to fish at high quantitys, for a planted tank, 1ppm of copper is ideal :)
