When you use an amrid zeolite filter as a means to remove ammonia from your aquarium, doesn't this also deny the beneficial bacteria the nutrition they require and reduce their numbers. Is it or is it not useful to use these filters coupled with a biological sponge.

You're correct. However if you're constantly removing all the ammonia from the tank what's the point in having bacteria thatr reduces it!

I personally wouldn't use it. But rather just have a biological filter.

Agreed. Avoid all chemicals,if possible. Just use a simple dechlorinator.

A question for an answer which i read about not using a zeolite just use a declorinator. how do you use a declorinator to remove ammonia. I thought that was what you use in your water when doing a water change

Hi....continuously removing ammonia could affect your biological filter by reducing the numbers of nitrosamonas in your tank and thus, the ability to process ammonia into nitrite. You could possibly have an ammonia spike after removing the zeolite. Dechlorinating, believe it or not, actually can RELEASE ammonia. This occurs through the deactivation of chloramine, NH2CL by the thiosulfate in our dechlorinators. See this thread for the equation. Good luck.SH
