Hi :)

I'm having a hard time finding the English name for a type of Platy I just purchased. I've searched high and low online, but haven't found a single image of this specific variety. The body of the fish is pale yellow (definitely not red or orange), and all the fins are black. There is also some black around the mouth. (Mine are not fully grown-up yet, there might be more black as they grow up). They are not Red Wags or Sunset/Sunburst. Neither are they what are called Twin Bar "something", since the tail is fully black, not just two black streaks. I know the Finnish name for this variety, but it doesn't translate directly. I'd be grateful for anyone who could help me with the name!

There is a branch of the Xiphophorus (platies) that are called Xiphophorus variatus which have been bred to produce different colour form and also different finnage shapes. These are the "fancy" platies and I presume that your platy is one of these. They have no specific name just the generalized one.

I assumed that all these different colors have their own common names, at least, like Red Wag, Dawn, and so on. How do people tell one from the other otherwise? While looking online, I've come across at least 10 different English names, but just not one for this specific kind. I suspect it might be the one called Yellow Wag, but I'm not sure, since I haven't seen a picture. (I'm not talking about the Latin name, just the English common name).

Don't know english name, but if you speak or at least understand finnish, then you should check this discussion. Also you can ask if they know its english name.

BTW, they are scientific names not latin B)

some Platties are impossible to find. until you mentioned the Twin Bar variaty i'd thought my girl Mishka was a mutt! it may take a while to find, why not provide a picture? she may indeed be a Cream Wagtail!

Did you say that he had a black tail...does he also have black fins, he sounds a little like Dude, my platy, who is a black wagtail..he's also a bit yellow in colour...I'll try to get you a picture of him, but he is a fast little mover...
