I've considered tetras and tiger barbs - been advised against the barbs by someone. Any other ideas? I'd just like some really pretty fish that are fairly peppy. BTW, avoiding swordtails cuz my roommate's already got a swordtail tank.

Thanks!

have you considered an oscar there very fun to watch exspecially when fed live feeder fish. they like to move around and they follow your finger my sister owns oscars, cat fish, plecos, silver dollars, and some kinda of shark don't know the name. i'm also getting 2 oscars on the 10th of november 6 days earlier then i thought.heres some pics and little info some of that info is a bit wrong like you can't keep just 2 your better off having 6 don't listen to that bit you could own 1 or 2 as many as you like there just saying that so you buy more well heres the link http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/...ical/oscars.htm
and heres another one that seems to be better then that last one http://honors.montana.edu/~weif/firsttank/oscar.phtml have fun bye

A 10-gallon tank is WAY too small for one Oscar, let alone two. One Oscar needs at least a 55 gallon tank, preferably larger.

A school of Neons or Cardinals would be nice, IMO. I had a little school (five) of Neons in my 10-gallon tank. They're nice and colorful :) There are also Glolight Tetras and numerous other ones, of course :) You could go for Platys or Guppies, if you want/don't mind more livebearers. Hmmm...what else? There are Corys - they're always fun  What else is in the tank?

as long as there is no fish with long fins like guppies or bettas i would say serpae tetras, they have a nice red colour and they are fun to watch when they play

A golden wonder killifish, a shoal of neon tetras (6 to 8), and 3 to 4 small cories or otos. Each type of fish would swim in each level of the tank. The least it could be is an educational model of an eco-system and evolution of different types of fish in the same environment. :)

an oscar would grow way to big for a 10g
they are very messy and big and need a huge tank

a nice shoal of neon tetras would look great :)

Deffinately harlequin rasboras (very pretty, shoaling fish), or black phantom tetras (my favourite tetras :p ). I wouldn't go for cardinal or neon tetras cause they need an established tank to thrive. Cories are nice but in a 10 gallon, you could only get the dwarf/pygmy or you wouldn't be able to keep any other fish as cories need to be kept in groups of at least four. I wouldn't go for livebearers simply because they are not shoaling fish. A possible combination would be a dwarf gourami and 7 harlequin rasboras. The gourami would add interest and contrast and encourage the rasboras to shaol. This kind of tank would be beautiful if planted and with some driftwood.

I've kept three or four Corys in a 10-gallon without any problems - I had a Pepper, a Panda, and an Albino, and then I had a few Peppers and a Panda or two. Most recently, my 10-gallon (before it was a fry tank) housed five or six Neons, three or four Corys, and a couple of Otos, with no problems. You just have to keep up on water changes and make sure your filtration is good.

Have you decided on what you're going to get yet? -_-
