My local water is very hard but I also have water softness installed in my house so have the choice of what water I take from the tap.

The ph reading are around 7.4 to 7.6

What tropical fish are best suited for that level of ph in a small 40 litre square tank

Do you know what kind of water softener you have?

Ok, you definitely don't want to use that water; it doesn't actually soften the water, it just exchanges calcium ions for sodium, which makes the water behave as if it's softer, but the amount of dissolved minerals are the same.

There are loads of fish that would be suitable; what are the dimensions of the tank?

You are already advising me on another post " Hi, new Fishkeeper "

It's a 40 litre tank, how do I post pictures

Yeah, it's getting a bit confusing! Never mind :)

I know it's 40l, but I'd need to know the length, width and height before I recommended any fish species, as some need more swimming room than others.

Sorry wasn't sure if to start new posts or not, it's about 35 x 35cm x 40cm high

It would be best if you found out the hardness of your water (you should be able to find out from your supplier's website), but you could look at; Endlers or guppies, dwarf emerald rasboras or celestial pearl danios, lampeyes or even Lake Tanganykia shell dwellers.

Lake Tanganykia shell dwellers.

Shellies in a 40l? I thought that would be a bit small for them.

In a 40l, I'd go for Endlers, as they are hardwater fish, but you'd be fine with the other species that FLutter mentioned, as well as chilli rasboras.

Yeah, it might be pushing it a bit, you're right; would be just about big enough for a pair though, IMO.

I rang the store yesterday to complain about their advise and all she basically did was slate forums about the advice I had been given there. She ( their store and company ) maidenhead Aquatics in Lincoln swear by the method of stability to help cycle the tank along with 2 x Gouramis and 4 small neon tetras!

Looks like Im on my own. I have a friend who used to keep fish so I will call him and see if he has some filter media/sponge

paddy

I will try and at least take the 2 Gourami back tomorrow anyway, even if I leave them on their counter and dont ask for my money back!

Shell dwellers are listed in the nano section for a 28L.  There seems to be a lot of disagreement over the nano fish list though.
Chilli rasboras do better in soft acidic water to my knowledge (I also have hard water at 300mg/L CaCO3 and I went through a list of nano fish crossing off the soft water ones, I crossed Chillis out for that reason)
The fish I had shortlisted for my hard-water 35L tank were Endlers, CPD's, Norman's Lampeye and Scarlet Badis.  Out of those I wanted Lampeyes but decided against it when I heard they have a tendency to jump out of the tank.
