A buddy of mine has this fish and doesn't know what kind it is

Is it at a disco? Looks like it's having a good time anyway ....
 
Notice how in each of the photos, the gouramis ventral fins/antennae, are reaching out. The gourami uses these to find it's way about, especially when unsure of itself. They emit tiny electrical pulses which the fish can use for navigation.

Could that be because of the lighting ?
 
Just out of curiosity, how big is that aquarium...cos tbh it really does not look very big given that all the photo's are from almost the same angle and what else is living in their with the Gourami?

they are also good for the boy gouramis who like to do touchy feely things to other gouramis ;) ;)
 
I'm thinking its a blue gourami, if it is it definitely needs a larger tank. You can see it does without even knowing the tank size.
 
Is it one of those Gouramis that were recommended as lookalikes for Male dwarves to avoid Dwarf gourami disease? They’re stripy but difficult to find iirc.
