World of water seem to have done it to me again. I went in and bought 4 bosemani rainbow fish. After checking through pictures on the internet I noticed that only one of my rainbows seems to resemble the typical half and half coloration of the bosemani's. The other three look like banded rainbows or another variation I am unsure.

I have attached a picture of the rainbow I am unsure of for you to look at, any opinions are most welcome. Cheers :)

Adam

P.S. Don't mind the tiger barb showing his bum to the camera lol.

hmm...mine never had that stripe even when young, but everything else re shape and colour is very boesmani-like. My guess is that you have a few hybrids, unless there are type variations that i am unaware of.

come to think of it they look like the rainbows we're selling at work under the name Boesmani's even though they look nothing alike?
where did you get them from?

I got them from World of water in timperly in manchester. It does look like a blue rainbow but I guess its hard to tell with it being so young.

It's a blue rainbow
I disagree, having kept both boesmani & lacustris for some years. Most of the features including the overall colour, body shape and even the eye appear more boesmani-like to me. The band is usually more bluish on lacustris (when it appears), though certainly it is usually non-existent or shorter & fainter on boesmani.
But i have been wrong before, and basing my opinion on only 1 photo that doesn't show much colour ;)
One of the difficulties identifying rainbows is that they can change the intensity of their colours and markings at the drop of a hat.

i would of gone for blue rainbow, but im not amazing at iding rainbows!

thats not a blue rainbow as if it was the yellow coloring would be under the blue. Its a young female boesemani.

the people posting at the end of this thread got it right. It is a female M. boesemani. They all start out silver and as they grow they start to look like the fish in the pic. Then the males go blue and yellow but the females stay the same.
Most shops sell young M. boesemani because they are a lot cheaper to buy. Adult males can sell for over $50ea.

Blue rainbows, M. lacustris are blue on the top half and silver or white on the bottom half.
