So after a couple of failed attempts at trapping the guy i finally got him out of his rock with a freshwater dip. I thought i saw him eating algae before so i thought he would be harmless, only the other day i woke up to find an empty snail shell so i decided it was time to try to get him. He's sitting in a bucket for now until i can figure out if he was innocent or not.
So anyway it has a dark body, dark redy/purple? with hairy legs that have orange tips.
Any idea what he is?

hi if it has paddle like back legs it could be a swimmer crab which swim after fish and can kill them but dont kill him if he is a swimmer crab ime sure you lfs will take him as im sure hed be fine in a species tank.

Oh goodness, look at the pincers on him, good job you caught him before he started on the fish!

Doesn't look like a swimming crab. Maybe some kind of xanthid crab? Either way it doesn't look (to me anyway) like a crab that would be safe around snails. Even if it isn't a swimming crab, there's probably an LFS that would be interested in it, since I'd probably want it if I saw it.

Yep I have emerald crab and looks the same, mine has caused mayhem in my tank I would recommend giving it to your LFS.
Its a purchase that I regret now :(
