i would say so, a rare find arent they? where did you come across them?

just came across them in a shop labelled as Vietnamese lantern rasboras :shifty:
as for rare, depends on the meaning, but I've certainly never seen this fish anywhere before

I'm pretty sure JJ photo has the correct fish pictured under the name but aquavise has not.

where is LL when you need him?

There are a number of Rasbora species that are basically silver with a dark stripe. R. sumatrana is a possibility, it is found over a very large range and has an amount of regional variation. R. parviana is also pretty close, as best as I can see from the picture, and is more a Mekong fish which corelates with the "Vietnamese..." monicker.

thanks LL
I had considered R.parviana however fishbases' morphology
state the Scale margins are outlined by a reticulated dark pattern.
I'm certainly no expert but looking at the fish I have I can not detect such outlines.

As both species appear to have been found in the Mekong, they both (sort of) fit the Vietnam moniker
(having been in the trade and knowing that wholesalers often make names up for slow selling stock to make them
sound more unusual, I doubt these fish even came from Vietnam in the first place, Thailand is more likely)

I think for now, I shall accept they are R.sumatrana until proved otherwise.
afaik there would be no great differences in conditions for either fish, so it should be a safe assumption.

I may have some of them 2, although ive never quite looked into them that much so i dunno

What do you think
Jonny

yours appear to be Rasbora elegans Elegant rasbora :good:

i dont think they are rasbora elegans as they dont have the 2 dark spots i was thinking more of Rasbora vegae or possibly rasbora paviei
Jonny

as my R.elegans matured the spots disappeared and became a solid line such as seen in the pic of your fish,
so my question would be have they always had the solid line?

Oh okay well i would not know as got them fairly large so i have not seen if they had the two spots
So you may just be right.
Jonny
