Ich/white Spot :(

I introduced 3 rummys into my tank about a week ago. The next day two were dead, showing no signs of why. The lady at the fish shop replaced them. Then another died a few days later (from the original 3). White spots started to appear on the Rummys. Then it spread to my other fish.

I have 2 platys, 2 zebras and five neons.

I've purchased some medication for this on the advice of a local (other) pet shop. Is it likely that the Rummy's brought it into the tank? Are they particularly susceptable to it/disease? By the way another Rummy died about 2 hours ago, so I am left with just the one.

The treatment is 3.5 ml over the course of 4 day's. I'ts the second day, and things don't seem to be improving as yet.

Everyone looks very unhappy and uncomfortable.

Can anyone offer any advice on where it came from, what else I can do, prevention techniques and also if I'm going to loose all my fish, as things arn't looking too good.

Neons can be abit iffy with meds so watch them, turn temp up gradually to 30, increase surface aeration, plus add two teaspoons of salt if you have no scaless fish in there.

Yes as it makes the med unaffective, two teaspoons of table salt will be fine if you have no aquarium salt.

I've just done that.

The last Rummy isn't looking too good. He'll probably have gone by morning . They're really nice fish as well.

I find they are not hardy fish i bought ten once and only one survived though that quite a while ago, good luck. You have increased aeration.

I can open the valve a little more yes.

Do you think they brought it in with them?

Most tanks can come down with whitespot when you have added new fish, i've only ever had it once thank goodness.
Must increase aeration though with upping the temp and med 02 reduction in the water.

Didn't buy them in Llanelli did you? I bought four rummys - two died quite quickly and the other two broke out with whitespot have upped the temp and put meds in last night. Fingers crossed it clears it up as my tank was spot on

I thought the rummys were gorgeous looking fish - shan't bother with them again.

Well

My last Rummy is on his last legs. That'll be 5.

Two neons have gone today and two more are about to, leaving 1. Plus 2 Platys and 2 Zebra Danios are still alive.

The medcine says take over 4 day's. The last day is tommorrow. What do I do if the fish aren't back to normal?



Also when do I clean the tank/water and start restocking.

Sorry for your losses R.I.P. tommorrow do a gravel vac and water change usually 30%, then add the med again, no fish for a month after the whitespot has cleared, good luck.

Can I just check on these. From the booklet that came with my tank, I have been doing a Vac every 2-4 day's and a water change every 2 weeks (25%) including cleaning all the ornaments etc. Plus swilling the filter media once a month in tank water.

Does this sound ok?

What's the best technique for the fresh water (I do add anti-chlorine)? Straight out of the tap? If so, how do you get the temp right? Or boil the water, and leave to cool? Or leave tap water to stand for a day?

Sorry to bombard you with questions but I want a successful tank and you offer good advice.

Right i do a gravel vac twice a week, so you are over doing yours abit much, plus you don't need to rinse the sponges as much you only touch them when they get gunked up,then you only touch one sponge at a time so you don't destroy to much of the bacteria colony. only thing you rinse is the matting filter floss weekly.
What are your water stats in ammonia,nitrite,nitrate,and ph.
For a water change i get a bucket add hot and coldwater which i good at gadging now but i still use the tempreture gauge thing bob.

Not sure about the exact readings but the lady in the pet shop said they were fine. I only have one sponge. Not sure what you mean by the floss. I have a peice of foam which goes into the bottom of the filter were the first water enters it. I swill the gunk off this.

Aare my new fish more susceptable to white spot now it's been in the tank? Would you not reccommend getting neons\rummys again?

Most fish are prone to whitespot, well kept both and no longer keep them neon tetra's had ntd which is why i don't keep them, plus all the rummy noses died, so i didn't bother getting them again.
