So my swordtail has ICH. It still has the white spots so i know i can't treat yet. but my question is once the spots fall off and i start medicating do i need to turn off my filter? if so for how long? because i dont want to leave it off for too long. thanks

I didn't even know you couldn't treat them while they had the spots...interesting....I would just take the carbon out of your filter but leave it running filterless while you medicate.

Good luck! B)

Hi joelaughing :)

Once the symptoms of ich are seen, it's usually best to start treatment immediately. This disease can devastate your tank and the sooner you start eliminating it, the better off all your fish will be.

Begin treatment immediatly.

Do not turn your filter off. Keep it running but take carbon out (if you use it).

I suggest salt and heat to treat.
Slowly (increments of 2 degrees) raise the temp to 86. Add 1-3 teaspoon of salt per gallon (over a couple days).

Give your tank one water change focussing on cleaning the substrate (to get the buggers)

Keep treating for 1-2 weeks after the last signs.
