ok, so over in Beginner's is a guy trying to treat a brand new tank (~3 wksold now) for an Ich outbreak. the tank is by no means cycled and he's got platys and a school of neons in it. how would you treat it?

i've been arguing against meds in favor of salt, but i'm no expert. if anyone could buzz over there and help him out, that'd be really good.

thanks! ~pica

Thanks a lot for helping me out Pica!

I've added salt to my tank yesterday and i can't see white spots on my fish anymore. I'm doing a water change today but without adding salt so it will dilute it a little. I'll let you know how it goes.

Also do a gravel vac to get the parasite out of the gravel.

A tank is rarely if ever free from Ich. The key is to make sure your conditions are good enough for the fishes own immune system to keep it under control. I wrote a piece in the pinned topic at the top of this forum on the life cycle of the Ich parasite.

Salt has no place in a freshwater tank.
