....I must say I hate Ich. First off, my levels are ok, except the ammonia was a lil high, but that is b/c it is time to clean the tank... The thank inhabitats were

1 Pleco (alive)
3 reg tiger barb ( one died) :-(
1 black shark
2 rosey barbs (one badly sick) :-(

I began treating the tank around 3 days ago I notice the pleco had white bumps on him, and it has been devasting the tanks since. I am following the directions, and I know it normally takes around a week to cure it. But I was wondering what causes it. I know it is a parasite. The two tanks that I have had it in lately are new tanks (one four week old, and the other around 5 or six weeks old) is this common and is it possible for it to jump tanks??

thanks

are you sure that it is ich? ich is very uncommon in plecos. the way that ich is transferred from one tank to the next is from universal filter systems that run all of your tanks taking the water out of them and filtering and returning to all of the tanks. or by using the same equipment from a diseased tank to another healthy tank ie cleaning equipment. after treating a tank for an illness you should boil the cleaning equipment to ensure the disease is not transferred. i have a short peice of hose that i use only in my hospital tank and no where else.

ich will look like salt is sprinkled on your fish. not really like bumps so to speak. maybe you have been treating for the wrong thing?

Hi cherry,

r u sure your tanks are finished cycling - in a cycled and properly working tank/filter your ammonia should be zero.

Its alot of fish for a newly set up tank 4/5 weeks - this could have put too much load on the new filter.

Also watch for overfeeding - you could cut back a little untill the bacterial colonies have had a chance to increase.

and if you have done any water changes in the last few weeks then this would probably have extended the cycle.....

thanks ya'll I believe i figured out part of the problem.
This tanks is a small 6 gallon, and I was feeding the fish around 2 too 3 times daily, so i believe it is a combination of over crowding and over feeding  . What is ya'll opinion?? through I think over crowding won't be much of a problem now 4 fish left :-(

thanks
