Ok I was observing my betta and now I'm paranoid that he has popeye too... but I'm not sure. Is it ok to treat both and Ich and Popeye at the same time? Or what if he really doesn't have popeye, will the medication for it harm him?

Thanks again!

Ok, I just bought my first betta (veiltail) a week a go and I've been reading this forum like mad which has helped a lot (great job guys!) Anyway, my betta has ich, I don't know maybe i got him with it already. I've read all the post and links on the disease and how to treat it. I'm kinda paranoid  about killing my fish (I really don't want to!) so I'd rather have someone answer my questions than read answers and have lots of doubts or questions. So here goes: :*)

I got my betta at a small pet store (I live in Mexico) and the guy gave me Methylene Blue to help disinfect the water. I have my betta in a 1 gallon bowl with live plants and I've changed his water 3 times since I've had him. My house is a bit cold (it's rainy season here now) but I have a lamp over his bowl so the water can heat up just a tiny bit. I've been reading that aquarium salt, aquarisol, Coppersafe, Mardel, Maracide are all great for treating ick... but each site give a different "medication" to treat this ugly parasite. I've been using the blue with the water every time I change it and yet this little guy got sick (maybe has to do that I had a fantail goldfish with him for two days?) :/

So my question, what SHOULD I use, the best treatment taking into consideration he's in a bowl and I can't raise his water temperature? What does this Methylene Blue exactly do (at the back it says it treats ich but it really hasn't helped prevent it... )

Sorry for posting question when there are tons of sites on the subject, but like I said, I want to be exactly sure of what I should be doing in my case or what exactly I've done wrong than read the sites and still have questions or doubts -_-

Thanks alot!

Oh yeah one more thing, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but his ventral fins are like shriveled up, they're not fully extended but more like stuck together which makes it look shriveled... here's a pic, with his ick and shriveled fins

Any suggestions or answers are very much welcomed!!! Thanks a bunch!

he doesnt look too bad.. you should be able to treat him..

try adding warmer water... but definately try some medicine.. sometimes it takes awhile to treat..

is he eating ?

He eats fine (so far) but today was the first day I've seen him really hyper and darting around (he's itchy right?). He'll eat about 2-3 pellets 3 times a day and usually if I put in one too many he just spits it out.

He's done lots of bubbles at the surface so I'm assuming that's the famous bubble nest??

I'm just not too sure what to use, the sites online recommend all diffferent types of meds and knowing me, I'll buy all of them and use them and try to use them all and probably end up killing my poor nameless fish :-(

Thanks for the encouragement!!

just pick any medicine, and try it... follow the directions, and he should be fine in awhile..

just dont overdose... ive done it a few times... it is hard when usually the instructions for dosage are per 10g..

but definately treat him with something

Just pick a med for ick, and use it . Many meds will work, but I like Quickcure. Just follow the directions and change water.

Hey guys great news! Last night I put him in my room with the heater on and this morning the spots he had on his head have disappeared (the wather had Methylene blue). He still has some on his fins so today I'm going out to the pet store to get something. Thanks a bunch for the tips!

My fish started forming ich and all I did was turn the temp in the tank up to about 80 degrees Farenheit. That did the job and all fish are ich free. I didn't add any salt or meds, but turning the temp up seemed to help.

Oh yeah speaking of temperature, the bowl is a little bit over 1 gallon (4 liters) and the guy at the pet store said it would be absolutely fine to put in a 10 watt heater. Doesn't sound right, I've read heaters in small bowls/tanks will boil the fishies. Does he know what he's talking about or is he just trying to sell? I've tried to do research on heaters and tank sizes but they're all pretty vague of what watt to put with what size.

I would avoid the heater in that size tank. Anything could go wrong and cook your fish. As long as he's at room temp he'll be fine. My theory is...if you're warm, then your fish are warm.

just get a light for his bowl and a little mini filter (not to strong) and he should be fine the filter will circulate the water heated by the lamp

So far so good, my betta is active and has a good appetite and today I did a 100% water change and added some warm water and placed the lamp over it.

Tomorrow I'll see about a filter and the meds (couldn't go today). I'm giving him Betta Bit, is it any good?

Thanks for the advice guys, you're awesome! :D
