The shipping bags are a little small, but very common. Most often betta are shipped wrapped in damp peat. So long as they are moist, they will survive. This is how they ship to make it cost efficient- water weighs a lot.

The dixie cups are a new one but I believe they only stay in those for a couple of days, until they're shipped to lfs's. Overall, "Aqualand" seems to have a lovely, clean betta display in their shops- according to the pictures.

With the conditions these are kept in for transport etc, I'm reticent about getting another betta that has been put through this. Is there any other way? Any UK breeders or something?

I just don't think I can deal with getting another fish that has been put through that.

Any ideas for another way/place to get fish?

i don't know where you all are from, but over here in the US stores like petco and pet smart receive their betta shipments in bags much smaller than the ones pictured here. i import fish from thailand every now and then; the bags are maybe slightly bigger than that. the fish are shipped overnight and arrive alive and well. while it seems cruel, keep in mind the larger the bag, the more opportunity for it to pop, burst, and leak during shipping, leaving you with one dry and dessicated fish :(

i thought it was a good place till i got down to the dixie cup. i dont really think its right to keep them in that small of a container. i have 4 bettas an the smallest is in a 1gal. but i guess as long as it is jus for a day or 2 it is okay...but no longer.

I don't think what they are doing is particularily bad. I have seen those shipping bags before. I have also seen them received in a regular fish bag that has been tied off 4 or 5 times to fit 4 or 5 bettas in it. As long as they aren't in that small of a container for very long, it is ok. In fact it is safer for the fish. Less room to move means less room to get knocked around. Their fish look well taken care of. I don't like that they promote small tanks, but we will never stop that completely.

That's the only problem I see.
