i would like to have a breeding pair of apistos, should i buy a group of 6 and let them pair up?

Which species? There's more than one kind. Some like to be in pairs, some in a trio, some in a larger group of 1 male and multiple females. Some need larger territories than others. Some tolerate other males, some might not. Some will only breed in the right conditions, ie a lower ph, while others are less picky. You'll have to be more specific about which kind you're after.
