I was at my lfs today to check up on the pricing of a new small 15 gal tank couldn't find any there but even 5 gal tanks were 50 dollars but they came with a built in filter system and i was thinking to myself oh greta either prices went up or i just never payed attention to how much my other tanks costed..well 2 of my tanks were presents from past years and one of them i bought myself so i am not real sure what the price would be normally but if thats case oh well but besideds the point when i went into the shop and i looked at the fishes for the fun of it after checking prices on tanks they were almost all of them were in poor health and the tanks were dirtyish and a bunch of fish in bunch of tanks had ich..all over them and this isn't the first time i have seen this from them..i have even seen dead fish in the tanks..i don't think i'll be going back there..i don't have many lfs around me so i guess i'll be heading to petsmart.. and they actually at the petsmart by me have a bigger selection of fish than my local lfs shop.. and they are in 100 times better shape and they are lively seem happy and clean tanks..good looking fish.

Punctuation is your friend! It's sad how the large chain stores are taking over. I walked into Petsm@rt the other day and I asked to see their water test log book. The guy came back and their ammonia had been over .5 for the past 3 months! So they effectively ammonia poisoned their entire stock. I was floored!

Robby, that is FREAKY. I can't believe they had ammonia readings that high and not lost everything! Still, I'm continually astounded by the conditions pet store bettas survive. The more I rescue, the more respect I get for their toughness and will to survive.

Before I buy any fish I ask for the previous weeks water stats. I think they HAVE to give it to you, because Ive never been refused, and I go to several different stores. But then again, once youve been in those stores every week for years, I guess they learn to live with your....quirks LOL.

Can you actually ask for water stats then? If i go to the shop tomorow will they give them to me yeah?

Mine do. ^_^ Most dont expect you to ask, but be specific. Dont let them just say they dont know. They do know, or if they dont, perhaps you should buy your fish elsewhere ^_^

So I'm suppoeds to log waterstats each week on each of the 140 indivivdual systems at work? I'm thinking not, it would not be cost effective and would take a member of saff a full day of work to do  Does thank make me and the shop I work at bad relative to the competitors and other LFS staff? I hope not, considering the shop has a good reputation and draws in customers from all the way down south neer Portsmouth.....

It is a reasonable request to see waterstats on a centralised system, in fact some are computer controlled and will have a screen somewhere in a back room showing a graph of waterstats, updates in realtime, for the last couple of weeks... If your shop is large with individual tanks set up, asking to see the weeks waterstats will result in an answer of "we don't test them" and even if they did, they'd need a forklift truck to move the logbook onto the shopfloor for viewing :hyper:

All the best

I have been quite impressed with my local Pets at home store in Stockport in fact you have just reminded me to get back cos they have completed refurb'd the fish section with huuuuge reef tank :)
Anyway, Pets At Home near me gives BETTER advice than the massive warehouse run by so called experts (they started in a small shop for many years slowly expanded) who like to tell you that tests for ammonia are useless (ph most important) where it was pets at home who saved my fish by doing the full tests. So annoying that a 'reputable' and one of the largest aquarium suppliers in North West (UK) doesn't know their stuff. They also sold me 1 Cory as an algae feeder

I would love to mention their name think there are enough clues in my description and don't want to get me or this forum into trouble but I will go to great lengths to keep mentioning this for some time.

As a positive they have got stunning stock but what does that mean with such bad advice?

Rabbut i love your post it made me laugh ^_^

I forgot to take into consideration the shops like yours lol. If I know thats the case, I bring a little container and take a sample with me lol. Since I live in the states, there are almost none that do it that way, well...at least none i would buy from.

But Im sure I would love your shop Rabbut ^_^
