So.. I don't really want another long tank but rather a smaller and/or more round tank. Something like a 75 gallon hex or corner tank. Anyway, i want some odd ball fish.

anyway, the fish i was intrested in where Channallabes apus and electric cat fish. what would be a tank to fit these two small (yet able to grow larger) fish?

I was thinking a low maintanace tank compared to my other tanks. Lower light levels, probably just a bunch of horn wort, some kind of muddy bottem.

these two types of fish, would they go tgether? how many of each? :/

what is the smallest tank 1 electric catfish would need?

Hmm, electric catfish are as the name suggests able to produce an electric charge to stun prey and predators, this includes any tankmates that you put with them, for this reason they should only be housed alone.
A 75g should house an electric catfish for life, ive never heard of a captive specimin over 18 inches and they dont really do a lot apart from when being fed, although you should be prepared for the unheard of and have facilities to house a much larger single fish should you need to.

Theres not much known about keeping Channallabes apus, its not a species i've kept so i dont have much i can offer. There is quite a bit of info about them feeding on dry land on the net though i dont know if this is a requirement or just a nice quirk.

So could multiply electrocs be kept in a 75 gallon Hex?

No, electric catfish have to live completely alone, even snails dont like to share with them. Even if it worked while the fish were juviniles as adults they are entirely solitary and will not tollerate anything else in their tank, even decore has to be chosen carefully as they will try to evict pieces of wood and rocks if they are not happy with them.

sounds annoying haha

well what is the smallest tank?

and what? doe sit eat other fish that are in its tank or shock them?

The smallest tank for an e cat is a 75g or at least a tank with the same foot print as a 75g, ideally you want a 120g (4x2x2) but since they are quite inactive a smaller tank will suffice.

They both shock fish and eat them, small fish are shocked and then hoovered up, large fish are just shocked repeatedly until they end up with bent spines and shaking on the aquarium floor.

awsome... but it would be a pain to clean a tank with one of those, I wouldnt want to end up shakeing on my carpet

I've heard it said that in tropical fish shops, the "new guy" is sometimes given this job as an initiation ceremony of sorts...

thats so mean :/
but cleaver... :shifty:

its has to be so funny seeing someone getting shocked(in more ways than one) like that-as long as it didnt really hurt them, sounds a mean fish :hey: no gravel vacs for mr electrik eel(catfish) today me thinks!

They really really hurt if they get you by the way, I was cleaning out a tank with arm gloves with a small hole in and i got got! It feels like being hit with a piece of 2by4!

You could ring Sparsholt College in Winchester for information about them, I think they have done alot of research into keeping them 'n' stuff.

They are not the most extrovert fish though, you should provide a cave or pipe and once you do it will just sit in it hiding!

:D haha! remins me of when i had a vandergraph and a home mad capacitier.. :D fun stuff.. fun stuff I tell you.

It doesnt hurt that much, its more of a "shock" for want of a better word than actual pain, i'd rather get zapped by my electric catfish than stabbed by one of the fins on any of my pims thats for sure, the last time i got caught by a shovelnose my thumb swelled up like a balloon and i had shooting pains in my arm for hours. The worst the e cat has ever done is knocked me onto my butt and made me bite my tongue, my pride was more hurt than anything because my mrs was laughing so much :<

Dont confuse electric catfish with electric eels!! The eels really can kill you, ive got one of these as well and i dont take any chances with that tank when im doing maintenance, its strictly hands out of the water and find a non metallic tool for everything that has to be done in the tank, 600 volts being discharged under water isnt pleasant
