i have a 46 gallon, which im going to start stockign soon, since the cycle is done.

im gonna have about 4-5 platies, around 4-5 cories, and some tetras for now.
would a red tailed shark be safe?

if not what fish should i change to let it be safe, or is it impossible and the shark will stress/nip the fish

Red tailed sharks can be pretty aggressive.
I bought one and put it in with Bala's and Angels....
BIG MISTAKE! He was evil in that tank.
I moved him in with the big Chiclids and he's doing great in there.
I would think twice about getting one.
But that's just my opinion.

I guess thats goes to show you about variations in individuals in a species. I have one in my 37 gallon community tank and he's not aggressive at all. Pretty neat little fish if you get a nice one.

hmmmm thats wierd...............

hard decision

Well,

there are 2 kinds. The red-TAILED and the red-FINNED. rt has a, well, red tail. The other fins are the same colour as its body. The rf has all red fins. The former is aggressive, while the latter is peaceful. It is possible that LOJ's is a rfs, not a rts.

P.T.

Sorry to add confusion, but my red tailed shark is a peaceful old soul. Sometimes he gets tetchy with the tetras, but they pester him occasionally like the fun uncle at family reunions, so i don't blame him!! He gives them a quick chase and they leave him alone. Not aggressive at all though, he's happy just swimming in all directions (including upside down - go figure?!). :dunno:

Mine was very young when I got him though (1 - 1.5"), so when he went in he was amongst the smallest in the tank; he probably was a bit scared and would need therapy to bring out the shark in him!

I guess it can be down to individual personalities...

My albino red finned shark goes Ape ---- on any fish that touches his bottom. he will sometimes even pick on th ottos that hang out on my plant. But they deserve it if they see a mts on "there" tank walls they will sucker right next to it and push it off. no wonder my tank is covered in brown alge.

Actually both species are aggressive and will fight with members of their own species. They are also terriotoral and will chase other occupants in the tank. The only difference in the species is the finage colour and as you said the temperament. However, the Red Finned Shark is still aggressive and terriotoral just not as much as the Red Tailed Shark.

Both can be aggressive towards other tank mates, but their real aggression is normally directed towards their own kind, or any other species that looks like another shark.

There are always extremes, some sharks a peaceful, others very punchy. The average is that both species are territorial, and semi-aggressive.

If the shark has a big cave to himself and is the last fish in he will be Ok must of the time. They are usually aggresive when a new fish comes along and tries to take there cave and he is chucked out.

I also have a redtailed shark who is peacefull 90% of the time, most of the time he is in his hiding place he does chase the others occasionally but only if they go into his corner of the tank, they definately need somewhere of there own to hide and make there own territory, my other fish are used to him and his occasional bad moods! :sly:

180l

1 red tailed shark
4 Mollies
2 Young Silver Dollar
2 Young Parrot
2 Slender Geophagus
5 Coral Platies

1 Patterdale Terrier
1 JackRussel
1 Groucy Husband
2 Angelic Childen

I have a red tail shark who is the friendliest member of my community, he spends most of his time trying to be a barb or cory just to fit in. He is harmless. And also not a shark remember ;)

My red tail shark is a little devil! It is always chasing the other fish around. It seems to be his favorite pass time. Only thing it dont bother is the frogs. Im thinking of re-decorating the tank. Move everything around and make a nice cave for it then put the RTS in last. I hope maybe this will calm him down a little. :dunno: There is a small cave that he used to hide in when he was little. Now he is out all day chasing the other fish! :/
