I am Jen (as if you couldn't tell LOL) and a Jayhawk born and raised - this just means I've lived in Kansas most of my life. I have been keeping aquariums for a few months (this go around)and been doing a lot of research online. I love the internet! There is so much out there about fish! I kept aquariums but dismantled them when my oldest son was a few months old. I was working full time and being a full time mom and just didn't have time. I now have 3 human kids. Dylan will be 8 soon, Ian is 4, and Brenna is 3. They absolutely love the fish LOL. I decided to get back into the hobby now that my kids are all now a bit older and I am only working part time.
I work at a vet clinic and have for the last 5 years. We see small animals and exotics like birds and reptiles in addition to this we also deal with the local wildlife through our town's rehabilitation center. I have a zoo of creatures other than the fish. We share our lives with our cocker spaniel, Picasso, our 2 cats, Herbie and Ladybug, 2 guinea pigs, Pumpkin and Doodle, our 4 cocktiels, Slyvester, Tweety, Daffy, and Hobo, and lastly our 3 sugar gliders, Winky, Hermione, and Violet. We have a very busy life that is about to get much busier with school starting!
Currently, I have 3 tanks set up 46 US gal bow front that is planted and a community aquarium, 20H coldwater setup with newts, goldfish, and a golden dojo loach. and lastly a 10 gal tank that houses our 2 dwarf frogs and will mainly be used to breed guppies and cherry shrimp. We have a pea puffer (dwarf puffer) that is misplaced in the 20 H until I get a tank cycled for him/her (the coldwater tank is a constant 78 right now). The inhabitants are described in my profile for those who really care to look
I joined this forum a few days ago because I had (and I'm sure will have more) questions. I of course made some mistakes with stocking and am in the process of correcting (like the puffer). It's been really interesting though to see the difference in attitudes of aquaria keeping from what they were 10 years ago. I had never heard of fishless cycling until I came here and will use this in the future- this is awesome!! I plan to learn more and get advice as I need it. I also plan to eventually install a CO2 diffusing system with my planted tank (I hadn't heard of this until I started surfing the web) but I have fairly simply kept plants at this time and don't have any issues though I know things will be much better once I have this going!
For all who have helped me so far, I thank you! By the way, I was one of those chain pet store employees and that is how I originally got way into the fish keeping hobby! I'm not a complete idiot but it has been years since I kept fish and there are now fish in the trade that were not common when I was previously keeping aquariums. I know I have and probably will make more mistakes but hopefully not too many!!!
