So I had 6 baby pandas hatch a few days ago, I went into hospital for a few days and had my husband look after them, two died and I got home and checked them, fed them, they all seemed ok, and went off to do something else, when I got back 6 hours later the air line had fallen out and all my babies were dead! I am wondering if they died earlier because they were due a water change today but I hadn't gotten to it til later.

Is this my fault or does it just happen? I have tons of albino cory fry and I know quite a few don't make it just after hatching for various reasons, and as only 6 hatched it does cut down on the odds.. I guess I am feeling guilty and want to know if the air falling out could have killed them? it was only a few hours and it was on so high the O2 content should have been enough to keep them going, I just don't know what to do, I am crushed because there were so few eggs and even less of them hatched this time around, and I do so well with the albinos, but the pandas have always caused me trouble. I finally got a batched that lived long enough to grow up and breed, now this happens! I don't know what to do :(

thanks all.

:-( sorry

It does happen. You are doing better than I am. I finally have gotten my first panda fry to make it to the grow out tank. I think there may be another in the net. I have hatched plenty, but they don't make it passed wiggler so far. The albino are possibly aeneus or peppers who normally have a very high egg count and survival rate. The pandas are much more conservative.

I agree with JS. Panda cories are more fragile of the cories. I've had C. Aeuneus babies, raised them with only a few die, but the panda babies were really hard to raise to sellable size.

Don't give up though. I have also found that the more they breed, the stronger their fry are. When they first mature and spawn, the spawns are normally weak, I found this with my Trilineatus too. But the more they spawn, the more success you have. Beginning of the year, I was able to sell 80 + of my panda fry, having had trouble in the beginning with survival.

Hope things work out for you. And hope you're feeling better after your hospital stay.

:D

thanks guys! I feel a bit better knowing its only half my fault! Hopefully next time I will find the eggs faster as well and less will go fluffy. I suspect they have bred before but my apple snail or hillstream loaches got them before I did! Doh! Working on moving fish around tonight though, so hopefully all will be well!

It took me a long time just to figure out what to look for for the eggs! Now I spot them fast. I think so far each species is a little different and requires a little different handling.

Thanks, Alex and Carmen, that was helpful to me too.

its also the habbits of the fish :) One pair of mine like to lay eggs on the filter, the other pair puts them in the corner and always use the same place lol
