I just got two new dwarf gouramis and I need to know as much about them as I can! Also I would like to fill my aquarium with two of all the different types of ghouramis that I can fit! My aquarium is a 16 gallon. :dunno:

Most gouramis are territorial. Some can't even be put with other species. Dwarf gourami fight between males (which are probably what you got since stores don't usually sell the females).

stores don't usually sell the females

people always say that, but 2 out of my 4 good lfs's have male and female gouramis!! i must just be very lucky :D

Hi

We have a pair of dwarf gouramis and a pair of neon dwarf gouramis in our 180L community tank. They all get on fine, sometimes the large male dwarf gourami gets a bit territorial and I don't think he'd like having another male dwarf in there, but he doesn't mind the smaller neon dwarf male and we think he prefers the female neon dwarf to his 'proper' mate!

Gourami Fan...if your tank is in fact a 16 gal. tank; I would stop at the two dwarf gouramis that you have. Add some small schooling fish like tetras or a few cory catfish and you should be set.

first of all, not to sound preachy, but buying fish you know nothign about really isn't a good idea.
okay, anywho, as was stated, you probably got two males. with a 16 gal tank and two males, youre done. no more dwarf gouramis will safely go in that tank. you'll need to be sure you have plenty of plants and a cave or two for cover and territory, as d.gs are very territorial. you'll need to keep an eye on your two, one may bully the other to the point it dies from all the stress. then again, they may be fine and stay in their own territories without much trouble. but DO NOT add anymore d.g.'s!!!!!
dgs can get stressed easily so i really wouldn't recommend any overly active fish as tankmates, cory cats are bottom dwellers for the most part, so you could go with 3-6 of those (minimum of three as they school and just aren't happy alone or with just one other). neons might just be a bit stressful on the dgs, though others ahve had success with that combo. i'd go with a non-schooling fish like mollies or platies maybe. keep in mind the 1 inch to 1 gal rule initally. just my opinion.

I'd just like to second MANY_A_MOLLY's advice, both about the dwarf gouramis and about researching the fish you like before you buy them. Asking around in advance could save you a lot of trouble and probably money too.

Hi Gourami Fan. :)

With your small tank, I would suggest you stick with the gouramis you have. Two dwarf gouramis are a nice top level fish and if you add corys for the bottom and a small school of neons or glowlight tetras or perhaps some guppies or plattys--mid level fish,-- you will have a nice, and balanced, community tank. ;)

This kind of an arrangement looks nicer and functions better than having too many fish living at any one level of the tank.

Gouramis are territorial to other gouramis but get along pretty well with most other fish, I have found. :D

I put two powder blue dwarf gouramis in a 20g. All they did was fight, could not stand each other. The dominant one eventually claimed the entire tank as his and the other one began to hide in a cave all the time. I had to get rid of one of them. I posted before I got the 2 of them and got mixed opinion some people said 20G was too small for 2, others said they had more than 2 in a 20G or less. I tried it for myself and it did not work out. If you are going to try something questionable make sure your local fish shop will take back fish that don't work out.
