On my new tank I have 4 things to plug in (filter, pump, heater, light) along with my overhead lamp. I have 2 outlet holes. Now I need more but all of the power strip and outlet things say not recommended for use with aquariums. So...what kind do I use? I looked all through the electrical section and the fish section at walmart and finally found one(electrical section) that said nothing, although if I asked they would probably not recommend it either. Is this just a CYA thing or is there some danger to using something with extra outlets?

btw with my current tank I use this thing with 3 extra that just plugs directly into the wall (it's not a power strip, just a rubber extra outlet thing) and haven't had any problems. I keep a water loop or whatever on all of my cords. I never even thought about it when I installed it.

Dollar store power bar $1.50 plus tax....
Tap up the sockets your not using with duck or socket plugs to prevent water in their. I use at least one for all of my tanks :)

I use at least one power bar per tank. In this thread I spent hours and hours drawing a superb diagram of how to protect powerbars with splash covers and drip loops - enjoy!

With plastic sheeting. I could draw some more pictures in the need exists...

Hmm I guess I spent alot less time thinking about elborate way to protect my power bar. Besides duct taping outlets that I'm not using I store mine in my stand with a drip loop of a cord hanging down to the grown. Even if I get a leak and my tank blows the water will go down the sides of the stand and not onto powerbar.

I've spent a few sleepless nights worrying about my tank leaking, and I only have a 10 gal. I hate to think of the mess from a big tank leaking.

I have ground fault interrupter outlets for my tanks. They are the same thing used in kitchens & baths to prevent electrocution. Power bars are on the floor, if they get wet & short out, the gfi pops, just like a circut breaker. If these things detect any abnormal current problem, they kill the power.

I found a really cool 8 outlet POWERCENTER @ petsolutions.com
It has a built in timer too, that controls moon lites, + day lites...pretty neat just got it...4 timer controled outlets + 4 constant.....when day lites go off moon lites go on, and visa versa..i got it on sale for 18.99 think its usually 25 bucks, but its awesome for timing.....

Thanks all!! I have no way of putting the powerstrip above my tank. I have some plastic drawers directly behind my stand and could put it in there, and cut a hole for the cords. That way if water splashed, it wouldn't get on the strip. I would also make sure to have drip loops in it. I'm also going to check on that powercenter at petsolutions.
