I posted this on the breeding board as well, but I haven't gotten any responses. So I'm going to try here. I have a free swimming fry and I need to know when and what I should feed it. I read on a web site that I could feed them egg yolk, does anyone have any idea if this is ok? I need help, I don't want my babies to die on me. If I need to buy something I have 3 hours to until walmart closes to see if they have anything small enough for them to eat if I can't give them the egg.

Well, there's baby brine shrimp in the frozen food section of your lfs that would be good for new fry, but I don't think you can get it at wal-mart. The simplest thing is to just crush some flake food into a powder, I've had good luck with it.

Gabe, not sure what your fry are but I've only ever had guppie fry, and as Harmonic says I've only ever crushed flake food up (sprinkled it really finley into the tank rubbing finger and thumb tightly)

Sorry, my fry are black skirt tetras. When do you start to feed them? There is only one that is free swimming and it is attached to my filter(in a safe spot). Should I put some food in now or wait a while longer?

Thanks for any help.

Hmm, maybe someone with more experience will be in soon to help? As I said my only fry were guppies and I fed crushed flake once a day during normal feed times (I know some fry need many feeds a day)

remember, only the strong survive!

Go ahead with your normal feeding schedule, just crush up a little bit of what you normaly give. What's important with fry is not polluting the water. You might need to cut back on the total amount of food you give at feeding time if you see any go uneaten. Watch the fry closely. If you see them eating the fine powderd flake, then cut back on the amount fed and increase the frequency of your feeding.

The main thing is to not let any food go uneaten. The cleaner your water is, the better chance your fry will have.

There is only one that is free swimming and it is attached to my filter(in a safe spot).

Please explain what you mean by "attached to my filter"?

If a fry is free swimming this means just that "swimming free" Before I assume anything I would like to know how it's attached to the filter!!

Well, when I saw the fry swimming I turned the filter off b/c it was headed pretty much straight for it. So it made it that far and then needed a break I guess and stuck itself to where the bubbles come out. It stayed there for a while and then moved back to the decoration. Don't worry, I watched it. The fry is safe and not sucked into the filter :D Although I haven't seen any swimming after that. They are stuck to the decoration and occasionally change places and wiggle, but nothing more. I'm a little worried as I thought they would be swimming by now

On my guppy fry i used a product called 'Liquid Fry' for livebearers but i know you said that your black skirts were egg layers but they do do a product for 'Egg laying fish' i think it's made by Interpet, most pet stores will offer a liquid food.

The fry love it, i usually keep feeding them for two weeks till they start growing bigger and then i start to slowly wean them off to crushed flake. The rule i was told always feed them food that are the same diametre as their eyes!!!

Always keep the tank clean as possible and make sure their is light airation in the tank, i usually change the water every three days and i keep a note of the ammonnia and nitrite levels (helps me determained the water quality and if i'm doing enough water changes)

Thanks for all the help. The babies seem to be doing great. There are 4 of them and I can see them much better today. They are still attaching them selves to the wall of the tank, does anyone know how long they will do this for? I put in a tiny bit of ground up flake food, they didn't seem to bother with it. But I will keep trying little bits until they figure out that it's food ;) I love my little babies, they are sssoooo cute  Again thanks for all the help!

You can feed them egg yolk, just put the yolk (boiled or unboiled, I am not sure) in a colth or something and squeeze it until little drops of it come out into the water and it's basically like the luqifry.
