Hey!
I need advice. Im new to fish keeping and sorry to say very unsucessful. :(
I cant seem to keep a fish for more than 1 month and 1/2. I want something that doesn't need too much attention and will live a while. I would also like one that doesnt like to live in a large group and can manage in only a gallon of water. Since
I only have a gallon tank then its really important it can live solo. Ok, i know I've really narrowed it down but any suggestions? :look:

:welcome:

my name is steph...i'm usually in the betta area.

yes....betta fish. they do not require a heater, one would live happily in a 1 gal, and they are usually considered unsocial, because usually either they don't like most fish, or most fish don't like them.

these are great fish...they are very seldomly "boring" and come in a great range of colors and fin shapes.

betta, i think, is a great beginner fish....

Thanks! I will be sure to check the betta section and read more about them!

Hi aquaobsessed :)

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

A one gallon tank is really too small for most fish, but there are a few exceptions. Bettas are one of them, because they breathe air from the surface, and do not depend on getting oxygen from the water by breathing through gills.

But there is more to consider than just the oxygen. Remember that fish eat and excrete in the water too, and it will get polluted in much the same way as if a human lived their entire lives in a very tiny room. Even with a betta, the water must be changed, and the bowl or tank washed, very often to keep it clean enough to have healthy fish. When it comes to aquariums, smaller does not mean easier, it means a lot more work. :(

I'm going to move your thread to the beginners section where you will be more likely to get helpful information. If you'd like, feel free to start another Newbie thread to introduce yourself. :D

Here's a link that will give you some basic information about the science involved in keeping fish. After you read it, I'm sure you will have many more questions, so don't hesitate to ask them. :D

Fishkeeping is a great hobby, and well worth the trouble to learn these fundamentals. It can keep you fascinated for your entire life.

OMG. you need twenty gallons minimun for a goldfish
Please, please read this Pinned Topic It is you fishes best intrest that you do.

With all the problems you have with your 1 gallon, you should really think about going to a larger aquarium.

Small tanks can become unstable very quickly, easier to rum a larger set up. IMO the smaller the tank the more experience you need.

Sorry, I don't mean to pry, but I don't think you sound 'old' enough to look after fishes. Do you happen to have someone who can help you with this hobby if you were to get a fish?

Do not sound old enough?

I personally got no indication of age from that paragraph, but problem has nothing to do with age IMO. just being a beginner with that small tank is not a good combo.

I have met very experience fish handlers on this forum who were very young. And if this person is really young, he/she writes better than many adults on here.

I agree canarsie11. I was in the wrong to assume aquaobsessed was 'young'.

There are many responsible youngsters in the forum, and in the wider world. So, I do apologise if I've offended you aquaobsessed. It just got worried when you said that you couldn't keep your fish alive for very long. I automatically assumed that if you were an 'adult' you'd probably do some research beforehand on things like water quality, fish living environments etc, but then, even adults 'fall down' in this area.
