Fish Fanatic
i've posted a few times here - not that much now.
i have (had) a ten gallon aquarium that had been established since september. four platies, two mollies, a snail. at the end of november, i moved the fish home and into a new set up, same filter, because an ex and i broke up and the aquarium was his, fish were mine. they were just fine despite the move, except the mollies. both of them had red sores near their gills and both died. for the fish, all of them went in a 1.5gal container and i took five gallons of the water in containers. everything went fine, the fish had another good month and a half. around january 18 i wanted to move the fish into my new room (i am a college student), so i packed everyone and everything up again just like last time. at this point i had six platies that were all healthy.
in the past two weeks everything has gone wrong - the platies i've owned the longest both came down with ich, i had moved then and begun to treat them, then the other fish showed signs of it and i treated them. the medication i had at have has malachite blue in it. one of my platies dropped fry, so i had three tanks set up (and mind you i'm double music major in college, the fry appeared the same night that i was studying for a large exam and this was really, really inconvenient). i think this occured because i had raised the temperature in the main tank to try to get the ich under control faster. the fry all died - it was my first time and they didn't appear to be fully formed, nor would they eat the food that i ground really finely.
and over the course of the past two weeks, i've been doing water changes, re-medicating, the ich spread and i began to lose fish. the last one died this evening.
i've just come to the conclusion that as much as i adore having my fish, the moving is really inconvenient, i've been horribly worried, and i honestly don't have the time to try to come up with solutions when i have four-part counterpoint that deserves my brainpower. i have the snail in my 1.5 gallon bowl and i'm just going to leave that for now. i emptied the ten gallon out, completely - i feel as if i need to take it home and scrub it out when i actually have time/space to do so, and start cycling it.
the articles on this forum have really been helpful to me in the past few weeks especially. i do appreciate it and i will be reading/posting still - and this isn't the end, i'm not giving up, it's just for the time being.
