I had two separate thoughts:

1) That I had too much gravel in one of my tanks so I decided that I would scoop out a few cup fulls immediately before the water change for the next few changes.

2) I wondered why so many little bubbles in the tank. All was well, no deaths, nothing to worry about.

These thoughts came together at the next water change.

Normally during a water change, I’m not that aggressive with the siphon in the gravel. As I scooped out some gravel, it became obvious where the little bubbles were coming from: decaying matter in the gravel.

I aggressively went after the gravel with the siphon and was astounded at how much gunk came out of it. After the everything settled, I was again astounded at the reduction in bubbles and how much better the water looked even though I thought I had perfect looking water before.

So, go after the gravel when doing a water change.

amen.

If you don't have a gravel vac, you can always stir the gravel with the syphon tube and collect whatever comes out when you do a water change.

I'm trying to get into the habit of stirring the gravel everyday.
