what kind of syphon are we talking about here ?

if you mean the syphon just to move water out of the tank (i.e. just your average hose) just fill the syphon first with water and then place one end inside the tank and the other end in the bucket where your going to move the water (which should be placed lower then the tank). Voila a syphon of water :)

place the gravel vac side in the tank (which has water in it)

place the other end in your mouth

have a bucket ready

suck on the hose until the water from the tank is about to go in your mouth...

before it does, drop the hose in the bucket and a syphon will start

make sure the water level in the tank is higher than the water level in the bucket

it won't work if the bucket is higher than the tank

works for me

LOL!!!! hahahah.

anyway i have a cool syphon whered u 'jiggle' it, moving it up and down to start the syphon, it has a non-return valve in it so water can only move one way which is into the bucket - no chewy bits for me :p

Thank you for so eloquently explaining why I own a Python now...

Once you've got the syphon running the water down into your bucket, use the wider end(which I presume you have in the tank) to suck up small amounts of gravel or sand. Just push it down into them lightly. The water striving to get into the siphon will roil it around and get all the dirt out of it and the gravel will drop back down into the tank on the bottom again. Try not to dig up any plants but go around putting the siphon nozzle down into the gravel at various spots all over the tank. You'd be amazed at what crud comes out up the siphon pipe even in supposedly clean gravel where you can't see any mulm or poopies.

And by the way, if you keep half an eye on the siphon hose when you first suck the other end, you can SEE the water rise up the tube and once it's over the hump of the side of the tank and headed down you can safely remove your mouth and gravity will pull the water down into the bucket, so you can avoid a bad case of fish breath. :kana:

 So many things to SAY but so little time.
Anyway, I've had my fair share of Mouth Full of Fish Leavings and Chunks.
While I agree the Chunks can be quite interesting in Taste, I don't like the Python because I've had the Drain Clog and Overflow my Sink, Causing a huge Mess when Draining my tank and have untold Gallons of water run all over the place, The most interesting being, Getting into the Duct Work of my house, Boy now that makes for Some FUN cleaning them out of all the Water, Not to mention having Pipes blow out under My Sink, and House even more fun. :X
If you don't Mind Carrying Buckets, Which after the ABOVE, "I DON'T"
But you don't like the Varied Taste of different FISH Leavings, I finally Settled the PROBLEM.
I went to the MARINE Section of my Local Wal Mart, And bought me a Siphon Bulb that you use to Prime a Fuel Line on a Boat with, Stuck it on the end of my Gravel Siphon's Hose Used a Squeeze Clamp to Secure it with, and added a Small peice of Siphon Hose to the End.
And ipso fatso, No More Chunks.
Not exactly Brain Surgery, BUT HEY IT WORKS.

i like the taste of fish poopies :hey:

I use the simple up-and-down shaking move to get mine going. If fish poop ever went past my lips I would still be throwing up now.
