such as say fry and juvenile cherry barbs that are going to be culled anyway.

would this be an ok way to practically use the extra fish, and would it be more beneficial than the fatty goldfish?
 
Best to try stay away from live foods.
That said, if you want to use feeders, then it is best to breed and quarantine your own.
Goldfish are crap feeders.
 
Why would you want to? I think there's better nutrition in food you can buy in your LFS. I would agree with your signature.
 
There's tweo different directions you can come from with this.

The first is from the point of view of feeding the large fish. In that case, live fish are best avoided; there are other things that make a more balanced diet, even if they're not goldies.

On the other hand, if you're overwhelmed with fry for some reason and can't re-home them, or have no space to grow them on properly, or have possibly got a spawn with some genetic deformity, I think it's ok to feed them to bigger fish; as long as you make sure the larger fish can eat them in one go, and don't let them be chased about and chewed up, it's quick and probably relatively painless, all things considered.
