'I just held my breath:' Charter boat captain, first mate share close encounter with shark

Just a harmless little Mako (blue) shark and nothing to worry about. Tag it and release it :)

It was a big boat with a ladder if they didn't want to stay with the little fishy :)

Mako's have the fifth highest amount of recorded fatalities of shark species. Although, truth be told, they're a pretty distant fifth. Great whites, bull sharks and tiger sharks have the most known recorded attacks and fatalities. Oceanic whitetips probably are number one for overall attacks and fatalities. They're more pelagic and known for attacking victims of shipwrecks and plane crashes. So no one can say how many attacks and fatalities they have to their credit.

That happening was just amazing!
Asian carps jumping onto boats through the Mississippi River basin have been implicated in serious injuries to boaters, including broken bones. How many of those together would amount to the mass of a single large Mako shark? The people involved in that incident can consider themselves very lucky. And to have been able to unhook, measure, tag and release is just incredible!
