I read that they are a very non-aggressive peaceful Cichlid for a community tank.

Is this true Cichlid Masters????

Help Me,

Silver

I've read that they are a "fairley peaceful" Cichlid, which could mean that they only nip the other fish rather than bite it's face off   ...I think that you will get a better response if you re-post this in the Cichlid section. Or you could send a PM to Cichlidmaster or Semper fi, they'll be able to tell ya :D

Hi Silver

From the little knowledge I have of these fish, they are semi aggresive, and should only be kepy with fish of the same size. Not a good fish for a community tank.

CM may have more info.

Hi MrV

Wrong type of fish.

The fish in question is a cichlid from Central America, and not a rainbowfish from Austraila.

Hmph!

English version of fishes' names are sometimes so odd and they used to have more than one name in same fish :alien: I like more scientific names like Pelvicachromis pulcher :p Well, anyway... I read it carelessly, just saw "Rainbow"... Im not very familiar with english names..

Pelvicachromis pulcher = Purple Cichlid, Pink Krib, Rainbow Krib, Common Krib, Rainbow Cichlid, Kribensis..

Hi Silver. You will find that the kribensis, or rainbow cichlid, or to be more exact, pelvichromis pulcher, has been written about extensively on the internet. I became interested in them because I wanted a cichlid but could not have a big cichlid tank, and they are smaller and generally more peaceful than the average cichlid. That said, they are still a territorial fish, definitely not a pushover, and they love  their caves.

I think my krib is my most beautiful, most interesting fish. As soon as I had him, I knew I would buy a bigger tank for him (he was in a ten gallon). I want to find a female and I hope that they will raise some fry. But I regress: your question was regarding kribs in a community tank. I would not dream of putting a krib pair in my community tank to breed. I have, however, added my krib to my 28 gallon tank, and he is doing very well there. You can see him and the tank I have added him to at this thread:

My Photos

As always, a lot depends on the temperment of the individual. My fish is territorial, but so far I have not seen any unbridled aggression. None of the other fish appear to be afraid of him. Again, he is not breeding, and I think that is important, especially since I have bottom dwellers.

So when you see that kribs are "community fish", and you will see that all over the place, I would keep in mind that he needs his cave, he needs space at the lower level of the tank because he'll generally stay there, and it might be best not to get him a mate. That's my two cents. Hope it helps.

Thank you Alia.....very helpful ;)
I had NO IDEA that when people talked about Kribs they were talking about the Rainbow Cichlid. How strange!!! :fun:
I suppose it could be worth a try to see how well he goes or she. Are the male kribs more attractive (those poor females  ) And how large do they get? I am going to put my 4 Silver Dollars in their own 55 gallon tank soon, so I will only have the 3 Angels, 3 gouramis and my Blood Parrot in my Community Tank 55 gallon. There will be room them for 1 or 2 more fish!! But I will take your advice and only get 1 if I get any rainbows, I mean...KRIBS!!

Thanks again and very nice photos!!!

:X ...I feel so stupid, I read your post the other day and didn't realise Rainbow Cichlid = Krebensis :*) ...We have 2 females and one male (who isn;t doing so well right now  ...he's in QT for dropsy :-( ) The females are much more colorful with their fat little purple bellys
As Alia says they are a great little fish, and each have their own presonalities. Kribbie our first female just putters around the tank all day picking at the gravel and not bothering anyone, but if someone buggs her she is quich to smack them down  . Kribbitch the second female is all that her name applies, picks on anyone smaller than her, and the male Kribble is a big wuss that runs away from platties  . I expect that if they ever mate the pair will get a lot more aggressive to defend the young, and I have read that they make excellent parents and care for the fry until they are big enough to go out on their own :D

p.s. You can see a pic of Kribbie in the Members Pics section :D

Why, Pufferpack, I didn't know you had kribs! I can't wait to set up my 29 gallon and start my "krib tank". I'd like to have one pair of another variety, also. Hopefully, they will all manage to share the bottom of a 30" tank.

I'm going to take a look at "Kribbie" now. No name for your male? :(

Hi Alia...We have names for just about all our fish :S ...The little Male is Kribble...reminds me of a character off King of the Hill - Dale Gribble :D

I've heard one trick with Kribs...once they pick out a home, ring it with plants so they don't have to defend so much turf

when ppl talk aboput kribs i think that they mean their homes......hahahahahahahahahaha

godamm them american pimp daddy films

 That's funny, teknikz, but be careful there with the expletives, the mods frown on it. I did know a guy who used "crib" or "krib" in that way -- his "place" or his home -- but he worked in the projects (inner-city Chicago) and his co-workers lived there and spoke the lingo. Generally, Americans use the word "crib" to refer to their babies' beds! :D

Sorry, Puffer, I missed Kribble's name on the first read. Your fishes' names are very cute! I will keep in mind what you said about the plants when I have two pair in the same tank -- it sounds like it might just work! :hyper:
