I have had my fish for about 4 years and I always keep his bowl clean and aways use the same water and feed. with in the last week or so he has not been very active and he is swelled up behind his gills in his tummy eara. It looks like he needs to burp or something. is there anything I can do to make him better. I have tried new water with Ick and fungus medication in it but it has not helped him out. anyone with any ideas? thanks

awwww, don't medicate him. He may just have digestive problems :/ I hate, hate, hate to say it but maybe skip a day of food and see if that helps. In the meantime give him a water change to remove the meds.

Now, prepare yourself because 4 years is a looong life for a betta, you've done very well by him.But keep in mind that he could be nearing the end.

If he hasn't got those diseases thrn do not treat him with that medication.

I hear that a green pea will help for constipation. However, with his age this may be his time.

If his scales look like they've been rubbed back then he may have dropsy. Which is how most old betta die from what I've read.

thanks guys, that was not the replys I was hopeing for but I guess he is old. he been a good fish he has been with me since the day I brought him to home from walmart, then I took him to work the next day and he as been here at work all this time me and many others will miss sponky if he dies. thanks for the info and I will be going to get a bag of peas at lunch time so I can put one in his bowl.

Spunky just keeps getting worse. he keeps swelling up, he seems to get a little bigger every day he is not eat much and he is not active at all. he looks like he could blow up any day. does anyone recognize this problem? is he in pain? should I put him out of his misery? any help would be greatful

I'm very sorry to hear of this......unfortunately I had my betta for 3 1/2 years and this is what happened to him before he died.

You've had him for a long time! and 4 years in betta years is like a 100 years old. Just be happy and thankful that he had such a long happy and healthy life!

did you do the pea thing? use a frozen pea-nuke it in the micorwave and peel off the skin. then crush it and feed it to him. also daphnia is good for constipation. tetra and hikari have freeze dried daphnia you can get at a lfs.

my fish Spunky died today, I did an autopsy on him and found that his swelling was caused from lots of clear yellow fluid. does anyone know what this may have been and how to prevent it from happening to my next fish. thanks

Honestly, like everyone has said before, four is extremely old for a Betta.

It almost sounds like dropsy, but in that case, there isn't a whole lot you can do. Not many of us look at the insides of the fish after they've died, so we don't really know if dropsy does have yellow clear fluid Seriously, though. Four years is GOOD. Do NOT change anything. You've done well by your fish, and you can't expect him to live to be the ripe old age of 20.

Mos people only have their little finned friends for 2 years before they day. You've done an excellent job with him. ESPECIALLY since you got him at walmart.

Your worst mistake would be to change anything, because you have managed to have him for so long. Just get another Betta, probably another color, and do it again. Give your little friend a nice little burial, and keep on chugging.

:byebye: Bye bye little betta!

And really, you did an excellent job. You should be proud of yourself that you gave him such a long, happy life.

I'm sorry to hear about Spunky :(

But I must applaud you for keeping him for so long! You did an excellent job

I would have to say that he was just old, and caught a bacterial infection that due to his age he could not get rid of.

Good Luck with your next little fishie!
