i probley will not do this because i dont think it is the smartest idea i have every had.
i recently bought i polyfilter pad just to make sure the tank free of copper.
whilst reading the back it says that it removes phosphate and nitrates and ammonia. it also removes metals.

so i thought could you use it to purify tap water before you added it your tank. what do you think?

(just want to stress i am not doing this i just thought of it)

Yes, it would work as a purifier for your tap water, I am not sure how good it would be as a single pass unit, but the water would be some degree better than not using it.

From the literature I've read on them, polyfilters can remove heavy metals. However, their ability to do so reduces very fast over time and a properly maintained RO unit is an exceptionally more cost-effective way to treat tapwater. For example, my $80 RO unit has been working for over 2 years now and has made me multiple hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water. Using a polyfilter to obtain the same amount of water would cost me anywhere from 2-10 times as much. Remember, RO units are very close to a once in a lifetime cost if you maintain them properly.
