Okay...I went to the fish store to get the little cream girl. There she was literally cowering under a leaf hiding while one big girl and a bunch of big silver fish were swimming around her. She is so much smaller than I remembered. Half the size of my 7 mo olds at least.

I put her into a 1 gal isolation jar with some aquarium salt and melafix for her torn fins.

I tried to feed her some Bio Gold pellets because they are small. She went up to it hesitantly. Tried to eat it and then didn't get it. I don't even think it went all of the way into her mouth. I then tried a piece of bloodworm. She went up to it then tried, then did not eat it.

I am at a loss, I have never had a Betta refuse food before. (And usually they are starving when they come home from the pet store)

She also has a tiny pin head sized black dot on her body near her back. Should I worry about this? She is so small her coloring is not very apparent yet.

Thanks again
Sandi

It's actually extremely common for Bettas to refuse food when they first arrive at their new home. Keep trying with her, offering her a variety of different things. She'll eat when she's ready.

It would also help if you broke up the Bio-Gold pellets for her. Just in case they are too big for her little mouth.

I don't know about the black dot. It could be coloring, though.

Gah, poor lil angel :( I tend to do impromptu rescues myself- very bad for me, really, cause I get attached and they don't always last forever! As to the dot it's hard to tell without seeing a picture, but it's possible it could be just the beginning of some marbling; I've seen bettas with a very little bit of dark marbling, but it could also be decay/disease of some kind, so you might want to post a pic. I hope she does all right!

My little girl has a lot of those little dots over her, more appeared as she grew up and came into her color. Now she is cream with peppering, and multi-colored fins. Rather pretty.

Anyway, she too did not eat for a fair bit when she came home. The pieces were way too big, even though they were baby sized. I had to crush them into almost powder, which made her tank icky but at least she ate.

Now she is a big girl :flex: but still smaller than most females, however she can handle the baby pieces. It took a long time though, of reconditioning and whatnot.

She was in a tank with goldfish :)crazy: ) so she probably ate goldfish flakes if anything... glad I found her when I did.

Your girl will be okay, you did a good thing! Hopefully the black spot isn't anything!

I keep trying to upload pix of her but I keep getting an error msg that it won't take the file type. They are saved as jpg. Is there some secret to this?

Right now she is floating on top of the water, fins clamped. I decided to give her a dose of kanamycin just in case....

I am kicking myself for not getting her 4 days ago when she looked so full of life. I hope I can figure out what is going on with her.

Awww bless her, she does look a little scared but if she was being bullied by the other females in the shop then its going to take a while for her to realise that she's safe now.

They don't always eat straight away as mentioned, give her time and keep offering little and often. I crack the bio gold pellets between a couple of tea spoons so that tiny mouths can still eat them.

Good luck with her :)

She's a very pretty girl. :)
Looks a lot like my little Daisy.

I agree with everyone else - she's probably scared out of her wits after being stalked by those big scary fish, and now being peeked in at by a big scary human :p but she'll come around.

As for the pellets, my Daisy still can't get the pellets into her mouth. she has to grab one of them and swim around until it softens up enough for her to suck it in. And I give them the baby pellets. You might want to try soaking her pellets first - they look like they actually get bigger when you soak them, but it's much easier for them to suck them in when they're soaked. You could also soak them, then cut them in half.

Just keep trying the foods - I had one girl who refused to eat for 12 days before I finally got her to cave and eat.

How much melafix did you put in? Just curious.

Thanks for all of your kind words...she is just floating on top of her jar, not really moving much. Still rufusing any food. She won't even swim up to anything. She is pretty scared. I hope she calms down soon.

It looks like she has some sore (bite mark) behind her eye. I have been putting in 1/8 tsp of melafix, aquarium salt and I gave her a dose of kanamycin yesterday. I will redose today. After loosing several new girls to columnaris I wanted to be sure she was not suffering from any secondary infections from the bites etc....

Thanks again
Sandi
