Watch that darting about - it can be a sign of nitrite poisoning. Don't forget to test your water regularly if you're cycling with fish, and do regular partial water changes.

sounds like a dwarf barb (Puntius gelius)

also known as golden barbs and golden dwarf barbs

try this link to have a look barb link

Tek :fish:

Interestingly, the fish in the picture on that link is not Barbus gelius. The picture is what has for years been called Barbus schuberti, the Golden Barb. Most modern researchers regard this fish as a yellow "sport" of Barbus semifasciolatus, the Green or Half Striped Barb.

There are a number of these yellow "sports", Gold Tench, Gold Carp etc. normally get picked off easily by predators in the wild but are, of course, cultured in the trade.

There is a drawing of B. gelius here, (slow loading).

Now I'm mildly confused. I have five 'golden barbs' in one of my tanks, but they don't look like the picture in that posted link. I was, however, going to say that I thought the original poster's mystery fish sounded like golden barbs to me.

I just edited my post with a link to a drawing of B. gelius - do they look like that?

The picture here, is Barbus "schuberti", commonly called the Golden Barb, female above, male below.
