Holy crud. This is coming from a danio person, these emerald cories are INSANE! They dash dash dash up and down the tank walls, back and forth, crashing into each other and just generally act crazy. My peaceful little betta community is shattered! Maybe its because they are so big and dark, you hardly see the other fish. I look at my tank and all I can see are these 3 cories dashing about. Maybe I will like them more when I move them into my 26 gallon when it is set up, because they won't draw so much attention (hopefully?). Everyone speaks so highly of them, maybe they will grow on me? :/

Are they just freaked out because they are in a new enviroment, or is this my welcome into the world of cories?

btw, they are in a 10 US gallon sand substrate tank with 3 WCMMs and two bettas (one male is in a breeder net until I get my quarantine tank back from the goldfish). Oh, and one unidentified pleco of some sort.

my cories were also zooming up and down the front of the tank when i first got them. just give them a week or two to settle into their new tank.

They will most likely settle down after a bit. Nevertheless Emerald Catfish also known as Emerald Cories/ Brochis splendens are a rough and tumble sort of catfish. They are bulls in the China shop. BTW, Emerald Cories are not true Cories at all, but a species of Brochis catfish. They do get bigger than most Cories, 3+", and can be a bit much to compete with for some cories. A boisterous fish.

u wanna see my 15 i have in one of my tanks! they look stunning together. they did take a few days to settle down so i wouldnt worry too much about it. they are a fun catfish as well... if you can get a big shoal together i would strongly recommend it!

as others have said they will settle a little after a few days, it could also be that they are slightly stressed from being in a trio, they really do prefer to be in groups of 6+ so if you can get a couple more then you should, they may feel a little safer and calm down.

Although they will calm down, they will still tumble over anything in their way and dash and bang into things.

I was planning of these guys to go into my 26 gallon, and I would add 2 peppered corydoras, though I could make that 3 peppereds to have 6. I had read that the different cory types would school together, so that would be ok, but is it different with the emeralds? I had actually planned to get bronze, not emerald, but they looked the same, and I thought it was just another name for bronze... oops.

They actually have settled down alot today, though they freak out when I get near the tank. (I understand that- they certainly didn't appreciate being harrassed with a net.)

Mine have been in my tank for about 4 months now and about once a week they (mostly the male) have a mad five minutes, going up and down the sides of the tank. Then they just go back to what they were doing, it could be the danios that are freaking them out. I know they have lots of mad moment, when we brough them we got told that when you feed them they are like kids on sweets.

Again the Brochis splendens are more rough and tumble than most Cories. They will pile over everyone like forwards breaking a defensive line for the quarterback. Well, maybe a bit overstated. My peppers did okay with them, but they got pushed around a bit. I think they may like temps closer to the aeneus/bronze. Actually my sterbai seem to be partial to the emeralds. Check the temperatures favored for your catfish as some like it cool and some warm. Peppers like it cool. Bronze like it warm. I don't remember what the emeralds like, but they have seemed happier at the mid 70's f.

Lol. Mine did this when I 1st got them aswell, I thought it was fun watching. They have settled in well and most the time are calm but every now and then they have a mad 5 minutes and then carry on as normal.

Haha Yes and in that mad 5 minutes the Brochis dominate the field. If they knew what it was they would make a touch down and kick a field goal.

Ok, I kinda like them now that they have settled down, but seeing as they get big (bigger than what I had planned) is this going to mess up the stocking of my 26 gallon, and would they still school with peppered cories? My water tends to stay rather cool. (In fact my tanks have always been unheated, but I live in Florida, so I haven't really had problems.)

I see what is being said about them possibly being too much for the peppereds, so what should I do? Should I take back the emeralds and try to get bronze, or should I later add 3 peppered cories with the 3 emeralds in the 26 gallon?

I had mine with peppers until a week ago, when I moved them into a warmer tank with the sterbai and added some bronze. Bronze like a warmer tank too. Peppers prefer 70 f or less and bronze prefer 75 f or more, but my peppers were spawning in 75+ f so they weren't too unhappy.

I think it is up to you. They will hang together. You can try your plan and, if they don't do as you want, then return them. Bronze get good sized too. I have one sterbai that got quarantined for a few weeks with an emerald, and now she thinks she's an emerald. Your catfish will not be bothered by your stocking--they are ok with heavy stocking. It might cost you a couple gallons if you have some sensitive other fish, but some smaller dirty fish could be worse than the Brochis.

Oh thank goodness this is normal! We recently got a green cory and it's been swimming up and down the glass all over the tank & I didn't know what was wrong! I had thought they were supposed to be calm fish so thought it was freaking out b/c it was in a new tank!
Good to hear that they do calm down though
