I do like the bubble tips, can I keep one in my current tank?

anyone got pics of theirs?

cheers Simon

Wait a while longer buddy, nems like really stable, mature tanks with top lighting.

Look at nem proofing your powerhead aswell.

It will really depend if you are still planning on getting a bigger tank Simon so for a BTA:

Tank needs to at leasr six months old and stable
Have T5 lighting at least
Be big enough to accomodate a Nem that is going to reach 12 inches within a year
Powerheads are covered

So, you see that your tank is currently not big enough - however, I had Bill in my 126 litre tank for approx six months before I moved him to the five footer. He did really well in that tank and grew very fast but I had my five footer to transfer him into.

If you bought a wee BTA, you could probably keep him in the current tank for a few months - but you will need to have the other tank planned and ready, probably within 4 - 6 months.

There is another consideration, your corals - the Nem may in his quest for a home kill them  If your corals are not stuck down, you could remove them to a holding tank whilst your nem finds a home - but to be honest, is it worth it! You could of course set-up the bigger tank now :D

So, it is do-able in your tank for a short space of time - is it wise - probably not!

Woops, you asked for a photo of Nems - here are mine Bill, Bill Jnr and Ben

cheers for the answers chaps

I was having a good trawl around peoples journals on here and the dark side and I just think they look so good.

I;m not upgrading for a while now using my 150g for discus I think so will leave the idea of a bubble tip!!..... but one day I will have one ha

My only advice re keeping nems is cover your powerhead PLEASE I learned the hard way, when my gorgeous BTA decided to explore my powerhead, the result is not pretty  and can easily nuke your tank, I was lucky to catch mine before this happened but to late to save the nem
For this reason I personally wouldn't keep one again.

Hey, I have been extremely scared when i first got my GBTA AND RBTA as i havnt done my research and got them abouth 2 months in my tank. At first, my RBTA was moving like crazy, fortunatly for me, I was extremely lucky having them to do pretty well considering they have been introduced into a not completely stable tank. Luckily, they have already gotten their 'bubbles', i suggest u keep ur alkalinity at 8, and if u use mh's, u should be good. All i had to do was raise my alkalinity to 8 for them to get bubbles, i was maybe lucky, or i was maybe correct. Personally, i would wait for the tank to cycle as it gives u a much higher chance of survival for your bta.

PS. ONE MORE IMPORTANT THING, RARELY ANY OF THE BTA'S FROM THE WILD SURVIVE IN CAPTIVITY, IT IS BEST TO BUY CLONED ONES. Both my RBTA and GBTA are clones which probably gave me a much much higher chance of survival and it has probably adapted to fluctations in water params.

good luck :good:

I would agree on going for cloned ones. There really isn't any reason to get wild gathered BTA's anymore.

Would also agree that the tank is a bit too small. You don't need MH lighting for BTA (and many would say that a BTA does better under T5 then under MH). But you do need enough T5 tubes to sustain it.

Looking forward to getting a BTA myself but I wont be getting one until I sort my phosphates out and finish messing around with the tank. I also will only get a cloned one as I'm sick of seeing dead and dying wild captured BTA's in my LFS.
