Those dimensions sound right on, my daughter has one that's over 4 feet long...the key seems to be alot of surface area, so long and low is the answer, not high...that really restricts the oxygen exchange going on at the surface. Lucky you! You must have been VERY good this year to get a 55 gallon! Just make sure you put it over some very sturdy floor beams before you fill it up with water! I'll be interested to see photos of it and hear what you stock it with. Way to go!
