So, my friend and I have been going to one of the local pet stores for a while. Since actually learning about fish, we've noticed they don't take stellar care of their stock, so we never buy fish from them, although we still go in and look at their fishes from time to time. We went in there a couple of days ago, and they had put three knifefish in with enormous cichlids. One of the knifefish had been killed, one was hiding in the back of the tank, and the third was swimming around with NO EYES. Thats right, this fish had had its eyes eaten right out of its skull while it was alive. You could see right through its head, and you could see its brain. It was swimming around in a daze, poor thing. And yet they still wouldn't take them out of the tank. I left and went back, intending to demand that they give me the fish so that I could euthanize it, and it had died. Poor fish, no living creature should ever have to endure that. Whats more, I found out that they don't feed their fish, they stock dyed fish, AND their plecos are constantly covered in ich (I have a soft spot for corys and plecos so this one bothers me especially). I've decided to stop buying anything from their store, and I plan to go in and tell them so, but I feel like I should report them to some sort of authority. Is there anybody I could report this to?

WHat country are you from? Australia have the RSPCA that deals with all animal cruelty, I have seen animal precinct in America on Fox and I am sure England has some sort of rescue facility as well.

Report this and report it now.

England has a RSPCA as well ;)

it would help to know what country you are in.

In England and Wales you can contact the RSPCA

from their website

Owners have a legal responsibility to meet their pet's needs ¿ this includes keeping fish apart from fish that will harm them but also may require housing fish with other fish for companionship. We welcome the fact that many pet shops label the fish they sell according to their compatibility with other fish.

However, I do not know if a *business* has the same legal responsibilities as a pet owner. I expect the RSPCA does though.

I'm in the USA. I hope we have some kind of animal protection here. :/

We have the ASPCA. I'm sure PETA would put together some kind of petition or protest if they knew about it as well.

Edit: I would tend to agree with Amunet, unfortunately. Most of our animal protection agencies are more concerned with cats, dogs, and livestock and don't really put much of an emphasis on "lowly" fish. However I used to work at a pet store that put their Bettas in small bowls (as so many places do), and PETA put together a petition against one of their locations. They started putting their Bettas in the tanks just to get PETA off their back, so it could still make a difference :)

America( go america!) has the ASPCA which is the show Rhiannon is talking about, they will rescue and have law suits. I think that you should give them a ring and let us know how it works out!

PETA would probably firebomb the place and call for a ban on pets.

I'd stick with the ASPCA. At least you can be assured they're probably not criminals ;)

Neither am I...they're a little bit over the top (to put it nicely). BUT they do make a big giant deal about everything, so if the pet store has PETA on their case it might motivate them to make a few changes, just to subside their wrath :)

But of the two, the ASPCA is most likely the better choice. If it can be proven that this place is habitually not taking adequate care of their animals, they could be shut down if they don't fix it up ASAP.

Heart breaking and no need for it, neglect and ignorance.
