I am planning to have a tropical tank. there are only 3 places where I live that have fish. 1) Dobbies. I rescued 2 calico orandas from there one died but the other one is happy but can only see out of one eye i think. 2) Pets @ Home they have a good set- up of tanks they get fish weekly from what i have seen. 3) Acorn pets a few fish but hardly any tanks but lots of products.

What i am wanting to know would a 53 litre tank be to small for a beginner. For stocking I was thinking:-

2x bronze cory
5x Harlequin rasbora
5x Neon Tetra

and maybe an eye catcher but not sure what. :dunno: Please give me some advice and don't go to exotic with the fish there ain't a lot of types here in perth

The corys should be ok, becuase they stay small...I think. The neons would also be ok. The rasboras....would be iffy, becuase they get a bit bigger and are active. I learned first hand the effects of active fish in a tiny tank. My 10 had 6 Tiger Barbs. They were there for 2 months. Never really had their full color and were kinda lathergic. Moved them to my 40G, and BOOM their colors have never been so bright and they are so active.

So I'd say ok to the neons and ok to the Corys. You'd be close to fully stocked at that point.

well I allready have 10 goldfish 6 of witch are in a 30 gallon tank 2 old guys in a 20 gallon. Told my folks I think it is to small but they say since there old there is no point putting them in a larger tank and I have to small goldfish in a hex tank that i think is 10 gall.

I was thinking tropicals because of my illness don't like being out at night and in crowded places. If I move stuff about I may have space for an other 30 gallon on my chest of drawers which would mean 3 tanks in my bedroom. :p

Hiya Jungle King, we may have the same illness.
Fish are ace, Yeah?

Hiya Barbel yeah fish are cool :kana:

My illness does have a proper name Mild agrophobia with public panic disorder.

I thought I would dumb it down for some people

one thing I want to know is it possible to have a non fry making tank as I don't know enough people or if any shops will take em. or does it take a long time for it to happen the fry making i mean :p.

As i don't want to be taken over by fish and have to live in a big tank instead of a house

First of all, you need to think about how to cycle the tank. I would look up the topics on fishless cycling, since none of the fish you have in mind are really hardy enough to cycle a tank. Corys can go into a newly cycled tank, neons ideally should only go in a mature tank (cardinals are a little bit hardier and you might want to investigate other types of tetras). You can always introduce the corys first and then the neons after a few months.

I would have thought you'd have room for 3 corys+ a small school of either tetras or rasboras (not both). You will need to make regular water changes though, and vacuum the gravel at least once a week.

Corys do prefer to be in numbers of 3 or more, so you'd have to think carefully about the space in a 10 gallon. There are smaller corys but some may be quite sensitive (ask in the catfish forum) and you may not find them in the shop anyway.

Being overrun with fry is mainly a problem if you go for livebearers (platys, guppies, mollies); most other kinds need active conditioning to breed, and neons in particular are quite hard to breed, so wouldn't worry about that.

I have printed the topic about fishless cycling. The oldest goldfish i have is 15 years and still going strong and as goldfish are messier than most tropicals i know about water changes . I was thinking cardinals but can't get them in perth and the only place that you can order fish is dobbies and there tanks are very badly kept.

I did say i may be able to go up to a 30 gallon tank but would mean getting all the equipment seperatly. I am going to be getting the plants established and the water stable before getting fish. Just because I have an illness dosen't mean I am thick.

:( just read that the type of cory I want need to be kept in groups of 6 . So I will need to know what size of tank would be best for that many and some fish to go with them.
