Hi

The pond will be 6 by 4 foot and 2.5 feet deep.

I want to keep goldfish.

It will be made with a pond liner and will be surrounded by a rockery, have a waterfall and a row of evergreen shrubs planted along the back.

I wil have a filter a pump and some plants, plus some fish - he will supply them with the pond

including all of the above and the labour the cost is £1200.

Is this too much? Am I being ripped off?

if any one from England could answer I would be very grateful.

am ridiculously excited about this.

I am going to be getting a pond put in for goldies too and its cost us so far around £300 for the liner which is 6x5.5 metres and the filter and pump. This will give us roughly a decent enough pond but have a section thats 4 foot deep so the goldies can over winter in it.
If you dont have a deep part then you will have to over winter the fish somewhere else in case you get a bad frost.
I personallly wouldnt pay that much to have it all done as most of it seems to be going to him to build the pond and not much on the actual materials.
Maybe the real pond builders here can help you more though.

How many goldies were you planning on getting as mine is only for 4 fish.

Where abouts do you live in the world or what sort of climate do you have throughout the year? If your winters are cold enough to snow or the ground freezes from time to time, the pond will need to be deeper than that as the fish will need to hibernate during the winter to avoid the worst of the cold- too shallow and they will not make it through the winter.

Check with your local university, library, city engineering department to find out what the natural inversion level is for your area. Your pond ideally should be 2 ft. deeper. Water below the inversion level will remain a constant 42 degrees F., regardless of air temp. Bacterial functions (both good and bad) cease at 43 degree F. The fish remain in a state of torpor (slow heart rate ect.) If there is a chance of the water freezing over, you must provide some sort of open are for gas exchange.

hi , the best thing to do in a situation like this is to ask for a price break down, find out what filter, pump, type of liner they were thinking of using, what underlay, what guarantee comes with the liner! once you get a price break down ask how long they will take to build it and that then gives you an idea of the money they will be making from building ur pond. My main question would be have you got any previous customes ponds who i could speek to or even go and see. £1200 sounds like a good price as long as quality parts are used!! .

recomended pond liner : firestone is one of the uk best avalible.

get the breakdown of the price first and post the costing for pump liner and filter if you are buying in the stone it will bump the price up

id say tops for liner/underlay ,pump and filter would be around £400 add in your aggrigates sand .rocks etc maybe another £150-£200 wiring will have to be added as well

and labour costs on top
£1200 isnt a bad price but you do need to go deeper 3ft minimum,if you can do some of the work yourself it might lower the price

Weve been adding the cost of the sand, the stone, the other bits and pieces and the price is going up and up
