The first one is brown fur. It is about 1/4 to 1/2 tall and very soft. It is growing on plants and wood. It looks like hair on the coconut caves which looks kind of neat, but it is really ugly in my moss and on my other plants. It is kind of hard to remove. What is it called and how do I stop it?

Next is one that looks like dirt. It is kind of grainy and brown. It is on everything in my new tank. I wipe it off and suck it up, and it comes right back. It is on the walls, plants, substrate... basically everything that isn't running from it. What is this and how do I stop it?

There is also one that is brown (of coarse!) that is flat and smoothe. It is growing on plant leaves. It totally covers the leaves and makes the plant look like that is it's leaf color. It comes off fairly easy, but I would still like to know what it is and how to stop it.

lastly is something that is dark brown and looks like very tiny antlers. It reminds me of tons of moose horns. This is growing on the edges of plant leaves. It gets quite thick, but has stayed very short. I tried to remove it, but it destroys the plant everytime. What is this and how do I stop it?

All of this being said... I don't care for the color brown, but I now have it in various forms and combinations in 4 different tanks!

If someone will tell me what these are and any additional info that would be great. Atleast with names I could do some research. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You have by the sounds of it quite a collection there. Take a look at my website - http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm and look under Diatoms, BBA and Staghorn as these are what you have. Plenty of photos to compare with. Diatoms are normal with new setups. Staghorn and BBA are red algae and normally due to poor CO2 or over feeding.

Thanks. I will check them out.
That would explain it... I don't have co2(yet), and I do tend to over feed. I am working on that. I just can't seem to tell how much is enough, and I don't want them to go hungry. That would make me feel horrible, as I only feed once a day. (at bedtime)

Thanks again :good:
