I finally found a shop that sells Hydro sponge filters. They stock one size that filters "up to 10 gallons" (Right Here), and I know this is a slightly stupid question, but does this mean it would be appropriate for my 5 gallon tank?

I'm looking for gentle filtration for my 5gal, because it stocks a single male betta.

I imagine the standard, "run it in my already established tank" trick would work on cycling it for my 5gal, if it's appropriate for my required use?

I've already looked into DIY sponge filters, but since I only need one, it's cheaper for me to buy it premade.

yes it will be ok for your 5g

on a side note
the advert says to rinse under running water, don't do this; always rinse filer media in tank water not tap water.

Yeah, I imagine it'd require the same weekly/biweekly maitanance a sponge for a standard HOB filter would require.

Thank you, I thought this was the case, but I wasn't entirely sure... it seemed to me, that size almost wouldn't matter with sponge filters, or would matter significantly less, than with more mechanical filters, since the capacity of a sponge filter would be directly proportionate with surface area -- it would still be powered by the same air pump.

I'll snag one tomorrow and start it on my 10g for use in my 5g later. That should make lif easier for me, and my betta.
