I have had my heart set on a external heater for a while know and have decided to order one. I thought however that I would ask your opinions first.

So can anyone tell me how well they function and how well they compare to internal heaters.

Also wondered if Hydor is the only brand on the market I can't find any others. Also can anyone explain why there aren't more makers it seems a bit strange if they work well.

As always thanks for the help.

I got one of THESE for my birthday and its great.
only problem is that its dosent come with any suction cups or mountings do it essentially hangs via the filter return, so not ideal.
What i did what tied it up with sme string so it takes the tension iff the filter hose

I have got a hydor 300 watt model, its been on my tank since xmas, and i have to say im very pleased with it, as bigian says it is supposed to hand on the filter which is not much cop, so i put in a screw to hang my heater on and theres no problem.

Cheers Gordon

I have one of the 200 watt models for the last 3 months. I have no complaints. As the other people have said, have a hook or screw to hold it up. Its rather big but well worth it as it frees up more aquascaping space in the tank.

i have 2 of these a 200watt and a 300watt i dont hang them up at all i just let them hang from the pipe had no problems they heat the water accuratley deffinatley worth a purchase IMO :good:

Hi,

I've got the 300's on both my tanks and would highly recommend them too - mine just hang from the pipe as well.

i have a 200w on each of my 55g tanks.

fits under the stand with my ehim, just had to hang it first. more reliable than the glass submersible heaters, although they do have plastic submersibles.

external hydor is great though, keeps the equipment out of the tank

I have the 200 model. works great - the temp is constant even though the tank has an open top!
My only fault with it would be the clicking of the relay switch when it goes on and off. If it's in a cupboard you probably wont hear it.

Had a 300W for a couple of years with no probs. Keeps water temp spot on. Only complaint I have is that the temperature control is very easily knocked when fiddling around in the cupboard. Fixed easily with a piece of tape.

Just to say thanks everyone. Got my new 300w and it was definatly £36 well spent.

Stupidly I cracked the old heater which I wanted to use as a spare but the new heater works brill.
