Hybridizing Livebearers Take 1

Take 1 at hybridizing livebearers, Molly x Guppy.
I have 2 Virgin Female Guppies and I am going to attempt to breed my Male Saffron Molly with them. The Guppies will be living with the Male Molly until they start showing that they are pregnant at which time they will move in with the Female Mollies. I'll try to update this thread when they breed, If they breed.

why would you want to do this? no lfs will take them because youve no idea what defects they will have, or how they will turn out, and would you keep and house each and every one of them?

not even being horrible here i just dont get why youd want to create a hybrid between two already genetically weak species that you probably wont be able to find homes for...
sorry but theres so many unwanted fish out there already!

of course if theres a valid research reason id love to see the results but if its just for fun i dont get it.

although i doubt theyd hybridise anyway theyre different species. ive kept mollies and guppies in the same tank and didnt get any fry.

There is an even bigger problem than those named above: if the females become pregnant, they are almost guaranteed to die in birthing because the fry will be too large.

I've seen a muppy or golly... The person at my LFS (Kella) wants some of the babies. This isn't for fun, I personally want to study them and the behaviours they posses. I know they'll be sterile and I would like a tank with a mixture of males and females in it, which will be possible without them over populating.

well it is for fun if theres no scientific purpose, and kittykat has made an excellent point, these 'muppys' youve seen were probably female mollies fertilised by male mollies, meaning fry were smaller than average. the other way round, no chance will either mother or fry survive. its like giving birth to a 2 or 3 year old toddler.

how are you even sure that these muppys or the other one are actually hybrids and not just reject specimens of a breed?

it just doesnt sit right and i really dont agree with this experiment. the only thing you will be studying is death in birth.

The two or three other studies I've read about were a Female Guppy and a Male Molly. If you don't agree then that's your oppinion, I'm sorry that this offends you.

dont you mean theres so many wanted hybrid and deformd fish out there if they were unwanted they woulden't be in all of the lfs for sale.
look a the deformd Balloon Mollies whether we like it or not there here to stay, if the molly cross looks nice and colourful a lfs will take them

dont you mean theres so many wanted hybrid and deformd fish out there if they were unwanted they woulden't be in all of the lfs for sale.
look a the deformd Balloon Mollies whether we like it or not there here to stay, if the molly cross looks nice and colourful a lfs will take them

balloon mollies arent a hybrid, they are mutants bred to be even more mutated because they look 'cute'

and they wont take them if they live 5 days..
you have no idea what these things will turn out like and its not worth finding out for your own amusement, especially as OP has stated, it has already been done.

and guppies are inbred and inbred and inbred over and over again, making them so stuidly genetically weak. mollies im not so sure of but im assuming it is the same situation with them, correct me if im wrong.

guppies genetically weak i was told that more then 30 years ago lol

I'm not going to judge the hybridising part, as all of my fry are hybrids(Platys/Swordtail) which was totally unintentinal as my LFS told me the females were male...i know better now, but they are right about the sizes. If you want to try and hybridize these fish, then the female needs to be a molly, otherwise, she will more than likely die.

it's a myth about lfs guppies are weak, short lived and very prone to a lot of disease
got this nice looking guppy from PETS AT HOME and 2 females date 15/9/11 as i don't know how old they are/ i will let you know how long they live for. how many fry they have when and if i have any problems with disease.
once the fry are born in your water conditions there is know reason why they should get disease or be short lived.
