I think they look quite cool, but with hybrid vigour you could be looking at a fish that reaches 2 feet in 18 months and goes on to be anywhere from 4 to 8 feet long. Not a fish for the average fish keeper by any means, and certainly shouldn't be as easily available as they are.

what's hybrid vigour?

Hybrid vigour, or heterosis, is described thus at wiki:

Heterosis is often the opposite process of inbreeding depression, which increases homozygosity.

Essentially, hybrids are noted to have growth that is faster than that of one parent, and can experience growth faster than either parent. This has been noted a few times on this forum in relation to cichlids. In the above case, consider just how quickly an RTC or TSN will grow, and try and imagine it going faster. You have a fish that will grow large, very quickly.

The RTCxTSN was, I have read, developed to try and create a faster growing food fish for the indigenous population. The RTC has more meat but the locals tend not to eat it and the TSN is less bulky and large.

aaah thanks for the explanation, thought it was something like that but hadn't heard the phrase before.

cute little bugger but i wouldn't want one in my tank!

looks cute, but wouldn't ever keep one without having a tropical lake to keep it in.

the hybrid is amazing, and its on my wish list along with a TSN and a RTC, but then I'd need a tank of a about 10k gallons

/me looks at sealing the house and filling...
