HI,
My friend has 2 blood red parrot fish, that have recently spawned. They seperated the eggs from the parents before they could eat them all and have made a little trap for them, with flowing water etc.
This was about 3 days ago and they now say the eggs have a fine fluff over their surface.
I think this might be fungus/bacterial infection, they have no idea and my fish book doesn't even have hybrid cichlids in it! Have googled and tried reading in the Cichlid section of the forums but nothing jumps out at me.
Could someone let me know, how long do parrot eggs (hahah) take to hatch? if fertilised (obviously)
AND
Is this fur on the eggs a bad sign?

thanks for any info.
Can only give general info about their tank as it's not mine. I know its 4ft x 2ft x 1.5ft ish (big) with a fluval 404( perhaps 304?) filter, lots of rocks/caves, 2x parrots, 1x Blue Gourami, 1x Pleco

Hope someone can help with my simple question
Cheers
Lu

If they have fungused they will not hatch; they've gone off. This may be because they were infertile in the first place.

Ahhh, ok i will let my friends know.
i'm still curious how long it takes though, i think i read 5 days somewhere but if somebody could confirm that would be nice.
i'm worried now that this fungus might contaminate their tank, is there anything they should do. I guess they should remove the eggs if its been longer than 5 days, they're fungussed and nothing is happening. if the parrots do spawn again, should they move the eggs into a hatchery net or let nature (and mums appetite) take its course?
Any help gratefully recieved, i don't personally have cichilds but i think they're beautiful and would love to know more.
All the best
Lu

Ohh I do remember my mates saying that some eggs were clear and some were opaque, would this suggest that some were fertilized or that the fungus made them change colour?
