So I have a young bristlenose in my 55g tank. She (I think it's a she, since some of the others in the tank at the LFS had the beginnings of bristles already, despite being the same size) has been living in the tank for a week and a half now, seemingly happy, sometimes quite active during the day as well. She's not shy at all either; she'll go on minding her own business even when my hands are in the tank when I'm pruning the plants or whatever. There was some algae on the rather large amount of bogwood in the tank when I got her, but she quickly decimated it all. I've given her tablet food but would like to switch to real veggies because in my experience tablets generate an unnecessary amount of uneaten food debris on the substrate (and I have nobody else in the tank, besides snails, that would prefer to eat at the bottom) and I don't want to go siphon the surface after every feeding. To that end, she's been without tablets for four days now.

Now, I've kept bristlenoses before. The duo of females I had for 7 years readily accepted pretty much anything I fed them, lightly cooked sweet potatoes being their favorite treat. But this one is different. Over these four days I've tried various veggies, both fresh and cooked: lettuce, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, zucchini and broccoli. I've even tried cooking the sweet potato with garlic. But the bristlenose princess can't be bothered. She may even stop to rest on the piece of vegetable without tasting it, then go on munching on the apparently much more delicious bogwood.

I reckon I can keep her without tablets for another four days, at the very least, since she's looking perfectly healthy. But I suspect that, in the absence of her usual tablets, she's nibbling on my Hygrophila leaves, because some of them are looking a bit damaged. How do I convince her to eat her veggies?

im afraid i havent got an answer :( but i also seem to have the same problem, but my 2 bns dont seem to go near it, even when the lights are off

same here guys--
i am planning of giving him
cucumber before i go to bed cause
mine ignored all the said veggies
on the first post--

-_-

I eventually gave up and she's now getting tablets. I plan to start another training regime in a week or two. Gonna try garlic with all the veggies (cooking the veggies lightly in garlic water) since I read somewhere that garlic is an appetite stimulant for fish.

I don't even know why I'm trying to get her to eat the veggies at this point. I guess I'm just stubborn that way.

Oh, she won't touch cucumber either.

Success!

In the end, I tried raw sweet potato again, and this time it did the trick. I figured raw potato or sweet potato would be too tough for her, but this isn't the case, because I just came home from work and found the bristlenose happily munching on the sweet potato. I hadn't peeled the sides of the slice, and apparently the peels are a great delicacy since she had started by scraping them all off.

Now that she's learned to eat one type of veggie I hope zucchini, carrots and cucumber can be introduced more smoothly...

:good:

good for you mate--
i'm still unlucky with my
veggies feeding- i left a
cucumber once and it's
left untouched-

might try your potato thing-

:D

She's eating lightly cooked carrot now too, but doesn't seem to really like it. Just nibbling on it a little.

Still won't touch zucchini or cucumber. I guess she has a bit of a sweet tooth.
